redundancy and paying for hol

I know this is a bit of a miserable post but I am looking for some advice about how I stand with travel agent and having to cancel holiday due to redundancy, have checked all my paperwork and can't find anything that covers this, any advice would be gratefully received.

hi sam

It is an all too common one I am afraid. my wife was made redundent on Christmas Eve of all times.

we have annual travel insurance but it isn't covered.

what we have done is contact Thomas Cook and we changed the date and also to the hotel which meant we can still hopefully go to the Dominican but not the hotel we originally planned. We had to say the reason why we were going to cancel the holiday and their specialist holiday cancellations team were able to help us and were very sympathetic.

The fees waived worked about to be about £200 and the changing the hotel and going a week earlier had an effect on the overall cost saving us about a 1k.

Good luck and let me know if i can help in anyway.

Love and peace to all.

Have you tried contacting the travel company directly? As well as the positive Thomas Cook response mentioned already, First Choice have introduced a redundancy protection scheme. It has quite a small window of booking dates that it covers but may be a sign that the travel companies are taking a sympathetic view during these more difficult times. I'd guess they'd rather you view them in a positive light for the future when you are back in work... which I hope won't be too long.

hi mark

In the uk it means the company you work for lays you off, normally because the company is trying to cut costs.

Because of the credit crunch in the UK a lot of people are losing their jobs unfortunately.
