Coming from the 2nd best ski party area on the continent(after Whistler of course), you would not like Punta Cana. It invented the word BORING. no town ,no night life, lots of families and old guys in speedos! You are better off in Varadero.

But you might want to check out Puerto Plata/Playa Dorada,Sosua/Cabarete area. Every self indulgence known to mankind! You need a good month to see and do eveything there.

It depends on the level of activity that you are seeking.

- Varadero beach is very nice and long. It is also bordered by about fifty hotels ( a la Miami Beach) If you have to use the bathroom, you are outta luck. All the beach entries to hotels are guarded and no non-guests are allowed.

- The beach in Punta Cana (Bavaro) is wider and nicer. There is also more sense of space, as the hotels are more spread out. At the resort at which we stayed, there are no guards to prevent entry.

- Out of hotel activities: In P.C. essentially none, except golf. you can go on paid excursions. There is no "town" in Punta Cana. Varadero is a town with the usual amenities, but the population consists mainly of hotel staff. Cubans are generally prohibited from entering the peninsula. It is about a twenty minute taxi ride to a hotel like the Blau Varadero.

ps it is a shame about Gray Rocks
