Do a search in the forum thread box.

Myself I would advise against it.

Not like driving in NorthAmerica.

Being from TO and a roadie being use to idiotic drivers all over our roads, I would not rent a car in PC. Not sure what time your flight arrives in PC but hpefully it's day time and you have a 30 min to your resort. Check out the driving on your way to the resort...

Unless you really know the country well and know where you're going... not recommended at all!!

-roads range from acceptable condition to absolutely decrepit. Potholes are everywhere and there is no warning for them. Also missing are stop signs at intersections and the ones that are there are ignored. Often, Dominicans honk their horn when going into an intersection without stopping to warn any cross traffic that they are coming through the intersection. There is zero lighting on most roads after dark.

-There is nothing to see or do in the Punta Cana area that can't be done with a tour or taxi or mototaxi. And you'll find renting a car pretty expensive when you figure insurance. (which you would have to be insane not to have here)

-In most cases the casual tourist will never see or have any encounter with the level of corruption that exist in every level of the Dominican government. But when that casual tourist rents a car, this may be an exception. Rental cars are routinely stopped for no reason by AMET (traffic police), Policia Nacional, military or people impersonating any of the above and try to solicit bribes to the tourist who doesn't know the difference.

-Fuel is expensive!
