Lobster in Punta Cana

I will be at the Iberostar Grand in 27 Mar - 2 Apr. I have read the wonderful reviews about how delicious the lobster taste. Do they serve them all year? When I went to Jamaica a few years ago they stopped serving lobster after a certain date. Does anyone have any info? Thanks!

The lobster in PC is from warm salt water and is not as good as what your use to.Or just really different.

Most resorts and restaurants which serve lobster, do so all year round in spite of the season being closed for part of the year. Some have mused aloud as to whether those serving in the off season have a lobster pound in which they keep live lobsters but personally (as I have never seen a lobster pound in the DR) I believe that like many DR laws, enforcement is very lax and they are simply ignoring the closed season and purchasing illegal lobster from the fishermen. The long term implications for the fishing industry are staggering.

You should try the Jelly Fish Restaurant which is not part of any resort in Punta Cana.

We have been going there for years and always had great tasting food including lobster.

I'm sure the Jellyfish is great but at $30 for a filet mignon and lobster at $28/lb plus drinks at $5-$9 each I would save my money for other treats especially if the resort I was staying at offered lobster at no extra charge every day.

Just my opinion though.

Lobster is avilable throughout the year, but for 2 months of the summer it will not be freshly caught.

As there is no comercial fishery in the country capible of supplying the vast number of resorts, most resort lobster is not in fact...Dominican caught lobster, but shipped in from other countries around the world. The same for most seafood.

Restaurants such as Palma Sands, Capitan Cook's and Jellyfish all serve locally caught lobster.

Cheers from mainly sunny skies and a light breeze morning!

exactly like PCMike said.

at the resorts you will not get dominican lobsters,

the large number of resorts is consuming per day more lobsters than our east coast produces during the whole year.

the hotels store lobsters for the 2 months ""off season"" when they are not caught/imported, none has a live pund, at least i never saw any at a resort.

dominican lobster is only served at a few dominican off resort restaurant, and even they very often have to fill up their storage with the imported lobsters.

there are very few local boats around the PC area working on lobster traps, like up Miches, in Macao, here at my place in Cabeza de Toro and a few more between the Punta Cana and Cap Cana Marina.

it is similar for the fishes,

usually the fish you get served at a resort never been i9n dominican waters, they are imported.

we do not have any commercial fishery around the Island, we do not allow longlining and large freighters wit nets or similar nature killing stuff,

they have no permit to enter our waters.

in case of fish and often also for the lobsters very few small hotels are the exception and serve the local goodies purchased fresh from local fishermen and from the sportfishing boats, like for example the Carbela Beach Resort & Casinoyou can taste the difference right away compared to the long frozen imported stuff.

happy dining

Mike
