Smaller Resorts In Punta Cana?

I'm looking into going to Punta Cana for the first time but not interested in the mega-resorts it seems to offer. I like the smaller resorts (less than 500 rooms at the very least, but preferably less than 400 rooms) where it doesn't take forever the walk from one end of the other and you're able to get to know the other guests. Do any of these type of resorts exist at this destination? If so, could you recommend some good ones?

Check out the Punta Cana Princess. From our room balcony we could see from the beach to the front lobby no prob. Took about 5 mins to walk from the lobby to the beach. Nothing was far away at all - it is one of the nicer laid out resorts we have been to.

Punta Cana Princess is very compact and great bang for your buck. It's adults only as well which is a plus for us. However, if you are looking for any sort of nightlife this might not be a good match for you as it is pretty quiet although you do have full access to the sister property next door which has more going on......

PCP is ultra small, no tram (none needed), great reviews, competitive pricing, great location, adults only, very quiet and laid back. Nightlife is next door at the Caribe with the production type show, lobby party and the disco if you want more. Perfect that way. the best of both worlds. Easy to make friends as you run into the same people over and over.

Gran Bahia Principe Ambar is a small resort within a large resort. very easy to get around. If you want to visit the other sections there is a tram every few minutes. Rooms nice, food good but its quiet there, no animation teams encouraging you to join in games. you can always go next door for more action.

I went to Barcelo Punta Cana in april and it is very compact with everything close by. Make sure to upgrade so you get the recently renovated rooms. We had an amazing room with a spectacular ocean view. It was a little odd using an elavator but quite convenient for my mom. Also would suggest the Ambar if you are looking for a quieter more romantic getaway.
