What are the "must haves"?

We're first timers to the DR and just wondering what the local specialities are. In Mexico we can't go home without buying Silver jewlery, vanilla, prescription drugs without a RX, teqilla and pottery. What can we look forward to?

Pigrl,

In the Dominican there are several local specialties. For one Larimar and Ambar (dominican stones) very beautiful :) They usually are incorporated with silver jewelry. Also Rum,cigars, and vanilla! They also do lovely wood work and art work. Dominicans are very talented and artistic people :)

Vanilla, coffee, sugar, and rum. Wish I could bring home the passion fruit. I can't find fresh passion fruit here, just the nectar.

Hi, I agree with posters above who've mentioned coffee, rum, cigars, and what bomberro posted.

If everything else was equal between Mexico and the DR., I would return to PC or POP in a heartbeat just for the things we can bring home and enjoy well after the trip.

Not sure if Americans are allowed to bring wood products home with them

but Canadians are not, if found they will be confiscated.

Have been bringing wood products in for the last 6 years with no problem.Always claim them, just get inspected for bugs and away you go , an extra 5 to 15 min depending on the airport.
