Depends on what you want. The beach infront of the Hard Rock is massive and very wide, same at the Barcelo Punta Cana. The water tends to be calmer at the resorts closer to the airport, but the beaches in my opinion are not as nice.

If you want white sand and, clear, turquoise caribean sea, then in front of the Magestic Colonial is good. If you like to watch rolling waves (swimming not always permitted) then you won't go far wrong with Excellence.

If you are looking for lovely white sand, no big waves and shallow water the Catalonia Royal Bavaro and its sister resort have the best beach in PC. The waters are almost dead calm, although outside the swimming area is a bit weedy in places, they try to keep the swimming area and beaches clean. The snorkeling is amazing right at the resort, there is a reef not too far out where you can see beautiful fish. There is little to no boat traffic in that area so it's nice and safe for kayaking, swimming out to the reef, etc. The palm trees on the beach are nice and large providing shade if you need it, plus they have lots of palapas and beach side bar service!

This is an excellent description of the beaches written by Mike Fisher. Mike lives there. The link below is a map of the area he is referring to.

so just to sort it out, here I go with a Beach-Sweep through Punta Cana from North to South, be Aware that it will be a long One as the Area is a very large Area, Tourism wide the Largest throughout the Caribbean

it starts with Uvero Alto, the northest Portion of Beach Area in the so named Punta Cana Beach Area.

here we have the Hotels Zoetry Agua, Excellence, Sirenis, Dreams 'Punta Cana'(yes, very fraudulent name giving compared to the real Location, sorrily Apple and Associates love to shine with such Tricks).

so from that Northern PC Point we go southwards.

the next to hit is Macao Beach, still no Resorts on that last piece of Public Beach Surfers and Seafood Friends Heaven.

on the southern portion of Macao Beach we find the Hard Rock Moon Palace Punta Cana Resort, a Monster Las Vegas Styled, built in the Caribbean, they just forgot the Caribbean Vegetation to plant, instead they just built a dozen of Pools on a very rough Area, Each His/Her own, there's a Customer for each piece of heaven I guess.

let's move more south from here,

so we reach what is usually named the ""Bavaro Beach Area"", sure only named so by Touroperators to market their Places, the Original Bavaro Beach Area would be still many Miles away further south.

but let's stay here. It starts with the Hotels Barcelo Punta Cana Premium, aside we see the Gran Paradise Hotel, then we are on the Corner for the Majestics and right aside on the Tiny Corner we find the Large Monster Bahia Principe Resort.

in the Area of the Majestics and the Bahia the Beaches are much whiter than the a bit more Brownish Sand Colors found in the described more northern Areas, but to get a Relation in Colors:

compared to any Northamerican or European Beach of this Globe, They are ALL Very white, the differences I describe here are slightly small ones, there is no Beach on the DR East Shore which would on a Vacation Picture not name any other Beach a "Browny piece of Ocean Front".

let's move Southwards, where we Reach our real Northern Bavaro Beach Area, here are Located the Resorts Riu and Iberostar.

the Coastline makes a Corner Now,w e enter on the Venture now the Cortecito Beach Bay, starting with the VIK Resort, then the Ocean Blue&Sands, Punta Cana Princess, Caribe Club Tropical Princess, Paradisus Punta Cana, Bavaro Princess, Occidental Grand Flamenco, Palladium Resort Carabela Beach Resort & Casino and the Barcelo Dominican Beach Resort.

Now We come to the Area where the Real Postcard Picture Beaches shown on all those beautiful Brochures and Promotions start.

The Original Bavaro Beach!!! One perfectly white and Calm large Bay,

not built by Brochures, not named by Touroperators or Agencies, just built and coloured Perfectly by Nature. It starts at the long running and Large Residential named Los Corales, the first AI Resort there from North to South on the Map, and from here on Beachwise there is no more difference in Beach Quality 'cause they are all the Perfect styled ones by Mom Nature, the first one is the NH REal Arena and Royal, then comes the Sol Melia Property with the Paradisus Palma Real and the Melia Caribe Tropical Hotels, the IFA Village/Ocean, and the Top Top Top Beach Location Barcelo Bavaro Beach Resort, even that sorrily at that Location the Services IMHO completely Suck, but nobody in Bavaro can beat their Beach.

now the Coastline of the DR East Coast makes a large Turn on the Maps, we are coming closer to the Old Faro, Closer to the Mona Passage, the Channel between the DR and Puerto Rico.

the next Bay We reach on our Journey is My Own Hometown, Cabeza de Toro. Pure white Sandy Beaches and all Year around Calm swimmable Waters, in addition also perfect for snorkeling from the Beaches due very little to none Boat Traffic.

The Hotels here are the Blau Natura Park Eco Resort, the Dreams Palm Beach Resort, the BeLifeGrand Bavaro and Punta Cana Hotels, then we reach the Point where I type right now this message on da Veranda watching that Nice White and behind da Calm Water, and just around the Corner we have the Catalonia Bavaro and Royal Property. Both sides of the Bay are completely protected/closed in by a Barrier Reef, Calm and easily swimeable All around the Year, No bothering Boat Traffic around, Water is shallow, so you can walk away from the Beach quiet far and still stand in the Ocean without swimming. Cabeza de Toro is a Fishing Town, aside of the Fishing Comunity at Macao Beach mentioned earlier the first and til today still only/together with Macao existing/living traditionally fishing comunity on the South East of the Dominican Republic, Hometown of the National Sportfishing Club named "Club Nautico de Santo Domingo" and also Home of the Unfamous Lawyer Hating Fishing Guy sometimes posting here His Weather Updates on Tripadvisor.

from here the East Shore of the DR makes an other Corner, moving further South passing a wide Area with no actually operating Hotels, named Cabo Engaño, one of My personally perfered Areas aside of Macao, but sorrily not swimeable, hence No Hotels, because here the Coral Barrier Reef hits the Beach, so the Beach is made of Coral Rocks and not soft Sand, but it is Just the Area around the Faro/Lighthouse, that perfect postcard picture Sand goes on towards the South right away.

first we pass on our sweep of the Coastline/Beachfront the Punta Cana Intl Airport, and we reach an other pure white sandy postcard picture Paradise, the Punta Cana Beach Resort(yes, the name been changed, but that's what we Locals will always name it).

World Class Golf Courses such as La Cana on the Ocean Front, Arrecife, Club Med, Tortuga Bay, Punta Cana Resort & Club, Punta Cana Marina & Condos, here we are in the Area where Dreams come True, or to say it more Truthful, Here They ARE True.

right aside the Punta Cana Marina starts the last/most southern Piece of the Eastshore, the Cap Cana Property. Cap Cana is a Large Development Project that hopefully will finish to be just a Project within the next 5-10 Years.

what they already have:

* one of the Best Marina Facilities throughout the Caribean

* Condos that can not be beaten by any Location in the Caribbean

* and the Bast#%346's even took away from OUR PUBLIC the Most Beautiful Beach of the Caribbean, named Juanillo Beach.

it is still Pure White Powder Sand arround the Secrets Sanctuary Cap Cana Hotel there, But it is NOT in any way the Same Beach we had before the Millionaires came to the Island and Fu$@##$@ a perfect natural Paradise down to ""commerce"", even that they then got Hit Themselves by the Lehman Brothers, their Big Buddies, loo, but still, no whiter Beaches nor calmer waters Found than here, aside of My own Backyard of course.

been a long one, I know, but I had Fun writing it and I hope that One or an Other Visitor will find it helpful to differ between the numerous different Beach Areas in a very wide Area named Punta Cana, as it would be just one lil all the same 2-3 miles stretch, which it isn't as I know for Fact and each piece is very well worth to be Explored.

Happy Travels
