Looking for.....

~a small(ish) resort. We do not want a mega resort that has trams to get from one place to another.

~calm, swimmable beach

~no more than 45 minutes from the airport

~AO would be great but not necessary

~is October considered low season? I realize that is hurricane season.

Hola: Punta Cana Princess is small, close to airport, good food, ocean is sometimes swimable and sometimes not - depends on weather and winds, October is low season. All of our trips have been in November, and for the most part, weather has been great.

For calm water, Dreams La Romana on the south coast has it. We have been there 4 times. Another option in Punta Cana is Catalonia Royal. Adult only, small, calm water, and real close to the airport. We are looking to go to either Cat Royal or Punta Cana Princess this November.

We usually fly out of Portland, Maine or Boston.

Good luck.

Ditto on the above 2 recommendations. Punta Cana Princess would meet all of your requirements. October/November are usually low season compared to the winter months from February through late April.........

October is a great time to go for low occupancy, great deals and good weather.

Puerto Plata is also a great area that has a airport around 10 miles from all the hotels and resorts. If your looking for an AI then Gran Ventana would be a great suggestion, if your looking for a more quiet and relaxing vacation then I would suggest Casa Colonial Boutique hotel!

Catalonia Royal.

Small resort, and you can use all the amenities of the Catalonia Bavaro next door.

Great beach with very calm water. Fairly secluded and you can walk for a long while before coming on another resort.

About 20 minutes from the airport

Adults only (the Bavaro side is family)

Just another option!

We are really leaning toward Catalonia Royal. We stayed at Catalonia Playa Maroma last year and loved it. Now, if only I can find a direct flight out of Boston.............

Have to ditto the PCP. We have been there many times in the fall and were always able to swim in the ocean. Very peaceful, but not a big night life. If you are looking for relaxation this is the place for you.
