Where Would You Recommend? Single Guy, early 40's

Where would you recommend for Christmas and NY for a single guy in his early 40's?

I've just got back from Varadero Cuba. It was good but here's what I didn't like. Lack of activities. I've worked on beaches teaching watersports and in Cuba only the staff are allowed to sail. Nightlife is mostly hotel based and in my hotel (granted it was a family hotel) the late/24hr bar was tame and mostly teenagers with a late pass. Local nightlife was a bit of trek by taxi.

I enjoy AI resorts but I can only relax for so long. So somewhere I can play on the water or maybe get a round of golf. I enjoy a late night out but not every night (spirit of 23 but body of 43). I worry that Adult Only are just couples and I don't mind resorts that are family as long as there is life there.

I've looked at Barcelo Bavaro Beach Adult Only and that's pricing at over £4.500, too much.

Any and all ideas will be welcome.

You might check-out the Gran Bahia resort complex. Several sections to select from. Many singles in your age group over the holidays. Lots of entertainment options and activities, especially over the holidays.

Happy Travels!

Thanks TravelPro, I've looked and some of these resorts are massive. Is there any interactive map of Punta Cana?

Cheers.

Here's a site that will give you resort layouts, although some may be out of date:

Thanks Mheath.

Is it me are all the resorts huuuuge? I've stayed in Puerto Plata a few years ago and I'm sure there was much smaller.

Seems to be difficult getting prices at the moment. Some hotels are just ridiculously overpriced and some operators and hotels don't even have prices yet.

Here's a link to the size of resorts in terms of number of rooms:

tripadvisor.com/ShowTopic-g147293-i28-k54430…

The largest in terms of rooms is the Bahia Principe complex. If I'm not mistaken, the largest in area is the Barcelo Bavaro complex. The Hard Rock, Iberostar, Melia, etc. are all large (above 1000 rooms). Some of the resorts are part of larger complexes.

But as you'll see in the list, there are some that are small to medium, which I would consider 50 to 700 rooms or so.

I don't pretend to understand pricing from the UK. I usually book direct with the hotel, and my flight separately. But I'm told there are discounts based on rack rates from the UK, and it depends on what the tour operators are offering.

Have you checked out Hard Rock Punta Cana. I have not been, but from what I have been reading it seems very lively.

I'm probably going to do the same as you Mark. Getting singles through the Tour Ops is difficult and the number of flights from UK are reducing. Only flight from Manchester is 25th and I'm not up for arriving jet lagged Christmas Eve. It's easier to go Air France and get a wider choice of hotels. I did separates to Cuba last month and it worked out fine.

Thanks Jeff I'll have a look.

It may be worth looking into having a night in London and flying from Gatwick with B.A, also look into booking the flight separately then book a hotel direct if your finding your choices limited.

Hi Veritas

I've checked that one out. Manchester to London plus hotel bumps up the price and adds a day. Manchester with a connection in Paris looks OK. Given the choice I'd rather fly Air France or BA than Thomson. I can see my flight being separate, it's finding the right hotel that will need the work. Melia isn't looking too bad.

Thank you for input. Any and all ideas are welcome.

Gavin.

I've been to Melia 4 times, Gavin. It's big, but doesn't feel crowded. Nice beach, lots of activities, good night life, lots of restaurants. Good choice for a single guy, I think.
