Secrets Royal Beach vs Excellece

Hi Folks,

Been to Excellence twice and, while we loved it, wanted to try Secrets.

It looks adult only, right? Can anyone give me a comparison?

While we are not heavy party people, we enjoy a nightlife and are in our late 40's. Are there many steps? How is the bowling alley?

Do you need reservations for dinner? Dress code?

Anything else you can tell me would help.

Thanks!!

Check out flipflop_man's reviews here: tripadvisor.ca/members-reviews/flipflop_man

He visited both last autumn, and his reviews are quite detailed.

SRB is adults only but is a sister resort to the more family oriented Now Larimar. Guests of SRB may use the facilities at Now Larimar, but not vice versa. The bowling alley that you mention, is one of the activities that is located next door at Now, as are the casino, disco, and bigger shows. SRB is somewhat low key, probably depending on the group that's there on any particular week. Daytime and evening entertainment is on a smaller scale, but with access to next door, SRB feels like a true escape, when you leave the hustle and bustle of Now.

Dinner reservations are not required at SRB. There are only three a la carte choices at SRB, so you may feel you want to venture next door for more dining options. I was at SRB for a week, and never felt I needed to have a meal next door. What was on premises was plenty for me.

Dress code for the a la cartes in the evening are pretty loose for women, but they do request that men wear long pants and closed shoes.

It's possible to navigate the resort without having to go up and down steps, if I recall, but there are bridges that cross over the lazy river pool that do have steps. I was on the ground floor, but presume that there are elevators.... I don't recall.

Beach is not as expansive as at Excellence, but it's quite beautiful, and the water is more swimmable.

Thanks Folks. Flips review answered most questions. What wasn't answered by him was by the previous poster

We loved E P C. But wanted to try another beach. It seems more or less comparable to S R B. We are not so hung up with the room. As long as its clean, comfy and well maintained we are happy. We only use it to sleep and shower.

What's important is a great pool, beach, nice staff, stuff to do during the day. The sweetie likes volleyball and water polo. I like dancing and chilling We like a bit of a nightlife. We don't mind going next door if we get bored. We are not into casinos.

We are not super picky foodies but enjoy good food/drinks. Wish there were more on site restaurants but seems that the ones there have good variety. We will folllow Flips advice as he guided us to E P C for our last 2 trips and wew glad we did. We plan for a 10 day trip.

We looked at Eden Roc but with so few reviews we want to wait and see for a while. Still am open to suggestions. :)

Hi

For a 10 day trip "we" would get bored at SRB due to the limited restaurants

Why not do a split trip with so many nights at SRB and the balance at perhaps Zoetry, Sanctuary for some chill out time. Eden Roc is a dream of a place but very, very expensive from the UK

We are keeping an eye on Eden Roc but don't think Isis a true AI. We thought about a bit of a break up but hate to unpack then pack and unpack again. Still, not out of the question. ;)

Dawnskye, not sure when you are going but they are opening up a new adults only in November called Breathless. It is managed by the same as Secrets (AMResorts) and it is supposedly a step up from Secrets. We loved the Royal Beach and are looking into Breathless for December.

Eden Roc is not AI

Packing and unpacking part way through a trip can be brought down to a fine art and IMHO any hassle it far outweighed by the advantages of staying at more than one resort

Hi Flip,

Have enjoyed all your posts on the Playa forums. We are now thinking of going to Punta Cana as we have been to Mexico since 2005 (Playa area - favorite hotel is SMB) - what are your thought on Punta Cana versus Playa? We love leaving the resort and visiting Playa a couple of days during our trips - enjoy Playa immensly with the beach bars, shops, and laid back feel - how would Punta Cana compare?

Thanks for any insight.

sorry to jump on this post but when I saw you here I couldn't help myself.
