thinking of going to punta cana

hi.....thinking of going to punta cana with my wife......could anyone please tell me...are you restricted to just staying on or within eyesight of your complex or is there places where you can go for a long walk apart from the beach..i.e. is it safe to do so and is there anywhere to actually go and have a walk to.......we know some people that went quite a few years ago to a different part of the dominican and could,nt leave the hotel complex only on escorted trips........also what sort of spending money would be reasonable for a 2 week stay...if we went al inc.....going out for the odd meal or bit of shopping ect ect

You can safely walk on the beach for miles, use common sense and you will not have any problems.

No need to stay within eyesight of your resort.

Spending money depends on how much shopping you what to do, and how many excursions you will go on.

I would suggest about $500 US should cover you, especially in an AI resort.

Hi, we are going to the riu palace bavaro in a few weeks, I believe there are a few other hotels which you are able to walk to,eat,drink at etc so your not just stuck in the one place. they to advice you to stay in your complex unless out on an organised activity. This will be our 7th visit to the Dominican.also we take about £250 worth of dollers, mostly spent on tipping and a few gifts. You do need to pay to enter and exit the country.

I have lived in Punta Cana since November 2004 and I feel perfectly safe going around town. I would say that you shouldn't worry about going outside the resort. Yes, walking is definitely great on the beach and you can go for very long walks and go in the ocean if it gets too hot.

Over the last many months, they have been working on constructing sidewalks that go throughout the town, so people can walk safely around on the streets.

If you want to go shopping, you could go to the Palma Real Shopping Village (pricey) or San Juan Shopping Center (ok prices). Both have shuttle busses that pick up at the resorts and I believe they are still free.

If you want to do an escorted trip where you really get an idea of the DR, you should consider either Bavaro Runners or Hispaniola Explorer VIP - both are full days, both are excellent.

We are heading tp PC for two weeks. We have 2 excursions booked per week at $200 an excursion. Those plus transfer money, tips, off site bar trips, spa treatment, shopping etc. we are bringing along quite a bit. It depends on what you want to do.

@barb111

Is that 200$ per person for the excursion? I am curious what excursions?

There is some excursions like Punta Cana Mikes and Mike Fishers fishing that have to be booked online and well in advance but for the majority of others they can be booked at the resort which are usually cheaper then booking online. There is also many that can be booked down by the pools and on the beach for a much cheaper price then what you would pay online or at the resort excursion desk.

For instance one of my favorites is Saona Island, online it is around 105$, at the resorts its around 85 to 95$ and I get it on the beach anywhere from 55 to 70$ per person.

@jimmy3cheeks,

Pretty safe to travel outside the resort day or night. Just take the standard precautions that you would take when your out at home.

Just back (sadly)! Felt perfectly safe! We walked along the beach for miles and we weren't hassled at all. Perfectly safe and absolutely beautiful. The shops and restaurants looked good nearby our resort, however we were too lazy to go too far! We did take a taxi to the Hard Rock Cafe for a meal and the shopping centre there, and although we we didn't leave until about 10pm to come back it was fine. We would not have done this in Jamaica last year. Hope this is helpful. PS Spent £700 in the two weeks, but for this we got a couples massage, drove a speedboat and went snuba diving/snorkelling (Bavaro Splash tour), did the Outback Safari Tour (highly recommended), went to Saona Island (do not miss this trip) and had a meal out at the Hard Rock Cafe (not particularly worth the money) as well as buying Souvenirs.

Mikes tour, Xtreme buggy, Seavis Soana and a catamaran sail. $200 avg for 2 ppl. Per excursion. No interest in haggling on the beach. Booked directly with the companies. Personal choice.

Thanks for the reply Barb. All excellent trips and you will have a fabulous time. For Xtreme buggy bring some older cloths as you will likely get dirty :)
