Thinking about going back

My wife and I and our 16 year old daughter visited Dominican Republic in 2001 We stayed at the Superclub Breezes Resort (Believe it is now called something else). It was right at the tail end of a strip of resorts. Whilst there we did a couple of excursions and did enjoy ourselves. However we felt a little restricted as there was nowhere local outside the resort to go. In fact outside the gates the are was quite deserted and very dark and I did not feel it was too safe to venture out.

In most our holidays we do like to explore a little and even with AI like to venture out at night to try something different. When in Playa Del Carmen,Mexico we could do just that with a variety of shops, restaurants, bars etc nearby and completely safe.

We are thinking of going to the Gran Bahia Principe Ambar, Bavaro and believe that we would have the use of the other sister resorts locally.

But is there any other nightlife locally that we could walk to and enjoy some other bars and restaurants, shops etc.

I get the impression that there are some but not a lot and you would need some kind of cab ride to get there and kind of stay put. It does also seem to me that for the word traveller that it is all generally based on resort rather then off. I am sure that there has been some development in the last ten years.

Anybody got any sound advice or even anybody that can compare Playa Del Carmen with Punta Cana

The Ambar is the adult-only (over age 18) section within the huge Gran Bahia complex. Yes, you would have access to their other resort sections as well as most of their on-site restaurants. The resort also features an on-site shopping & entertainment area. With regards to walking to off-resort shopping, you can walk down the beach to the Riu shopping area as well as the beach vendor huts just past the Iberostar complex. But that is about it. There have been a few small shopping areas built in the region since your last trip here in 2001, but you will need to take a taxi or shuttle. The Hard Rock has a world-class casino and nightclub just a 10 minute taxi ride from the Gran Bahia. And there is a really unique disco set within an actual cave that you can go to called Imagine.

FYI - the old Breezes Punta Cana Resort in the northern Uvero Alto Beach area is now the Barcelo Punta Cana.

Comparing Playa del Carmen to Punta Cana, that area of Mexico has far-more off-resort shopping & activities & restaurants to experience. While there are daytime excursion adventures available to purchase, Punta Cana still is a destination where most come to relax and enjoy the amenities & facilities of their resort.

Happy Travels whichever you choose!

I agree with Travelpro. Having been to the Playa del Carmen area of Mexico, there are a lot more off-resort activities and amenities in that region. In Punta Cana the area I like is around Bavaro/El Cortecito because there are more things within walking distance. Here is a map link so you can see what resorts etc are in that area.

You mite wanna consider the north coast like PP(sosua, caberete) area instead of PC.

We have been to both PC and PDC several times. We used to worry about what there was outside the Hotels to visit such as shops, bars etc. but then found we were not bothering with them much anyway.

We did visit PDC centre a couple of times during the day but we just strolled around and bought a couple of bits from Walmart and the Souvenir shops.

There isn't much outside the hotels in PC really, you can shop at the Corticeco or some of the newer Shopping centres though.

As said there are plenty of bars and a few restaurants in Puerta Plata but I doubt you will even visit them much if you are in a good AI.

You should be looking for something more central in Bavaro so you can leave the resort and have a walk around, as you seem to be looking for adult only I would suggest you take a look at the The Royal suites Turquesa in the Palladium resort, you get to use all the facilities of the other palladiums and your central to explore outside.

There has been more development since you were last there, but the emphasis is still on spending time within the resort or on the beach. If you are looking for more to do off resort then it may be better to consider another area eg Sousa, Caberete (north coast), Las Galeras or Las Terranas (Samana).
