Hard time choosing lodging-BEST LUX PROPERTY?

Hi, y'all.

We are considering a Winter Couples trip to DR/Punta Cana in late January...

We haven't done an all-inclusive since our destination wedding; none of us have kids, we like "lux" accommodations, good food, good drinks, a fun--but NOT party atmosphere, all early 40s. As none of us have been to DR ever...would like any advice you can give on the area of Punta Cana itself--is it a "town" where it would make sense to not go all-inclusive and have a choice of places for dinner, etc.? OR...are we better off at an all-inclusive property? I have looked at Excellence and Iberostar Grand Bavaro...any help or advice would be appreciated!

I think both Excellence & Iberostar Grand are great properties, when I was deciding between which resorts I wanted to stay at; these were the two that I had on my short list. I ended up choosing the IB Grand (it's all a matter of preference). I liked that the resort was not far from the airport, I had heard the food & service were great (served top shelf alcohol). We liked the modern look (some people prefer a more tropical feel at Caribbean resorts). We also liked the fact that the Grand was small (I think there is around 274 rooms) w/ access to the other IB resorts w/in the complex & free wireless Internet access etc. I could go on and on, but I don't want to bore you...I'll be traveling to IB Grand in 3 weeks (yay!)...I hope others will chime in about these two or other properties.

I've heard amazing things about Excellence as well (I don't think you could go wrong w/ either property) - they offer similar amenities, but I have to say Excellence does not have this whole reservation policy for a la cartes which I really like...the reservation policy for the a la cartes was the only drawback (for me anyway) about the IB Grand.

Have not stayed at either resort, but both are very popular and I'm pretty sure would supply what you are looking for. Just to give you an idea of areas...

Excellence is in the northern part of the area called Punta Cana (not a town per se), in Uvero Alto - I have stayed in this area (returning next summer) and it is beautiful, but there is not a lot to do should you like the idea of restaurants, shopping, etc., close by. Of course taxis are readily available, as are most excursions. It is about an hour from the airport. Beach there is more of a sugary, light beige as opposed to white, and ocean conditions a bit rougher than say Bavaro Beach - still gorgeous!. Excellence is a stand-alone AO where Iberostar is an AO in part of a larger complex.

Iberostar Grand would be closer to more "amenities" (lack of a better word) like restaurants, bars, shopping in the El Cortecito area - not sure about walking distances, but taxis again readily available.

I've included a couple of maps to give you an idea...

I cannot comment on going non-AI, as I am not sure about what "luxury" non-AI accommodations are out there - I think there's one in Cap Cana... We loved the AI experience, as we wanted for nothing. Having said that, we have toyed with the idea of renting a condo some day, in the El Cortecito/Los Corales areas where we'd have the opportunity to be "out and about" on our own, enjoying the restaurants, bars, shopping that are available in those areas. I guess it's all about what you're looking for in a holiday - if looking at being totally pampered, food and drinks included, option for resort activities and/or off-site excursions, than AI would be the way to go...that's not to say that guests at AI don't venture out for dinner/disco/casino etc. elsewhere off their resorts.

You will surely receive other responses that will provide more information - good luck and enjoy the beauty of PC, wherever you might end up :D

Take a look at Breathless Punta Cana, it is opening November 15th. It is adults only that is being marketed as a very nice resort with a fun social atmosphere. Not a spring break party place but martini bar, wine room and cigar lounge type of place that will have a live music and evening beach and pool parties.

One of the managers at a Secret resort (Breathless and Secrets are part of AMResorts) described it to us as a South Beach meets Caribbean type place for the over 30 type crowd. Elegant with a fun social environment. It hasn't opened yet so there won't be reviews until mid late November.

Catchin...are you not a little early in suggesting a place that is not yet open??? Who knows what the reality of the place will be. For all anyone knows...they could totally screw it up...who knows!

Personally based on feedback I get from my guests...seldom does anyone have a bad thing to say about Iberostar Grand. It is relaxed and very well done. A great golf course is on the property (I play it weekly) and you have the opportunity if you wish to visit the neighbouring properties (Iberostar). Location also puts it a short taxi ride from a number of excellent "off resort" restaurants if you wish to escape the production line cooking that is a part of all inclusive life.

Cheers

PCMike

Not at all, I very clearly stated it hadn't opened yet. We chose it for some of the same reasons the OP was mentioning. It was just a suggestion of a place they may be interested in. Since it has not opened yet they may not be aware of it.

Others have made this same suggestion on other posts as well.

You are correct that without it being opened yet there is no way of knowing but we have been to other resorts such as Secrets and AMResorts seemed to get those right. With some fair opening special rates and based on our own experience we are willing to take the chance and trying Breathless out for ourselves in December. Just like all the other resorts if may not be for everyone.
