Island Excursions, Spring Break, other opinions

My girlfriend and I are going to Punta Cana from 04/19 to 04/25. It's my 3rd All Inclusive Caribbean vacation and I wonder how it stacks up to Cancun and Aruba. We are staying at the Majestic Elegance and have the Elegant Club package, because we definitely wanted an adult only area. I have a few questions and would love all opinions from people that have experience on the island.

First, what are some of the best excursions to get out and explore the island? We like to zipline, explore, and see things that we can't see on other islands.

Second, I saw that Spring Break ends around the time we are leaving, the weekend of April 25. Any experience with Spring Breakers and it being too much drunk partying? We like to drink and have a good time, and we were college aged too, but not really looking forward to a rowdy party week on our vacation. It's why we picked so late to go, hoping to get there after the partying has ended.

Third, I've been reading other posts on Tripadvisor and there are a lot of bad reviews of leaving the resort, Punta Cana not being as good as other Caribbean islands, rough beaches, and not much to do if you go off the resort. I would love to hear about other experiences from people that have gone to the island and compare to other all inclusive resort islands in the Caribbean.

Thanks!

I can answer some of your questions:

The ME is not a heavily hit resort by the spring break crowd. Simply put, you can get a better price and a better party atmosphere at other resorts. We went during spring break season last year, and only came across a handful of spring breakers and they were the well behaved variety. Going back in 5 days!

The ME has a good blend of party or relaxation, which one of those you do, is up to you.

Punta Cana is nothing like (ex.) Cancun. In Cancun there is a town with many shops and restaurants to visit. PC has bars, shops and such, but they are spread out, and not all on one street like Cancun. There is plenty to see off resort, but it may take a cab ride to get to it.

I can't comment on the excursion question, we were bums and spent most of the time on the beach.

Spring Breakers will be gone by then and Majestic was not on their 3 big travel sites that cater to the big parties so you will be fine.

Those complaining about rough beaches, not safe and nothing to do off resort likely did not do research before there trip. Some areas of Punta Cana for instance up North in the Uvero Alto area (excellence, breathless, dreams, sirenis, etc) yes the beach is very rough, there is nothing really off resort in that area and it's one expensive taxi to get to things.

Plenty of things to do "off" resort from walking around the El Cortecito area with shops, local bars, resturants, 4 tourist clubs, some resturants/bars on the beach that turn more into a bar at night, many different plaza and beach markets for shopping, theres the Palma Real Mall as well, etc

Here's a map below of things in the Cortecito area... Your resort is not listed on this map as it's higher up North... But to give you an idea from Majestic by taxi to where it says Steve's Bar on the map is a short 12ish minute drive.

Safe to go off resort and no more dangerous then in your hometown. Follow the standard safety precautions and you will be fine... No flashy jewelry no flashing big stacks of cash.

Really it all depends on what you want to do.

For excursions there is some great ones from culture trips to fishing and everything in between.. Below link lists a hundred things you can do with reviews and pictures.

Matt and BigJim, thanks for your replies. Lots of good info and links I will look into. I've looked up a lot of stuff on trip advisor and other places, but most of them are opinions of people that either really love it or hate it. I was hoping to get some good information on here and your replies were excellent. Thank you!

Joseph, I'm hardly 21 or 22. I'm more than twice that age. I do love to have drinks and have a good time, but also love to relax as well. Great to get the best of both worlds without a "spring break" atmosphere with people doing beer bongs and over drinking would be nice. I don't mind people being loud and having a good time, but hey, I was young and in college, I know how annoying things can get with a large crowd over partying.

I do look forward to it and going to Punta Cana, but I like to cover everything and do some research before getting there. We booked our trip, then I started reading about spring break not ending until the week after easter, and also started hearing about PC being really bad compared to Aruba, and other Caribbean islands. However, I think that's mostly from people that are hard to please.

Though there isn't much to do outside the resorts in Punta Cana, compared to the Cancun, and Riviera Maya area in Mexico, you will find a few excursions in PC that you might be interested in. Having stayed at the Majestic a couple of years ago, know that You will love the Beach, thick, clean, soft sands for miles in both directions, and the surf is not rough, yes some waves, but more the gentle, soft kind. Would suggest parasailing while you there, if Fun, Safe, and one of the more reasonable priced things to do, other than that, You will definitely have a Great time at the Majestic, from the Beach, the Pools, shows, small casino, disco, live music and dancing, and of course, drinking as much as You like at the Beach, and Pool, with wait service, or at the Swim-Up Bar. Don't Worry about Anything, Be Happy, Relax, and Enjoy ! Best Wishes, Leo & Sue ps. Do tip the hard working employees, we tip maid service $4. daily, bartender, and drink service at the Beach or Pool $1. per round, and the bell boy $2. when arriving, and leaving, these people do work hard, and long hours, and tipping will make your service just a little bit better, even though tipping is not required.
