Which resort is best for us? ME, SRB, RST or ...?

Our flights are booked for the last week of June, 7 nights; please help me decide which AO hotel or hotel with AO section would suit us.

At the risk of sounding fussy this is what is important to us:

We are late nighters so hoping for lots of evening entertainment, live bands, shows etc (not discos) and good social scene for chatting with guests and staff.

Prefer lots of choice of a la cartes for dinner not keen on buffet in the evening

Sun loungers with cushions or mattresses!

Good quality room, prefer new or refurbished

Preferences, not deal breakers:

Bars not too smoky

Calm water for swimming

Pool and beach not too crowded

It has been about 9 or 10 years since we last visited Punta Cana. We previously stayed at Sunscape (now Be Live I think) and Iberostar Bavaro with our children who were quite young at the time. In the last few years we have been lucky enough to stay in some amazing new hotels (mainly in Turkey but also Mexico, Dubai, Morocco, Egypt and other Caribbean destinations) which, I confess, has left us rather spoiled.

Current front runner is Majestic Elegance Club and I actually have a good price. My main concern are the rooms. I know we won't spend much time in the room but I am wondering whether they have they been maintained and the bathrooms, in particular, are okay? Is the damp, musty problem that some people mention worse in ground floor rooms or at certain times of the year? Have the new Club rooms (in the block with the swim up bar behind Elle) been refurbished?

Other choices are:

Secrets Royal Beach Preferred Club - the beach looks amazing, the rooms look very nice but it seems that several restaurants and much of the entertainment is mainly in the family orientated Now Larimar?

Royal Suites Turquesa - can anyone tell me about the evening entertainment? Are there some new rooms here and what are they like?

I have considered and discounted Royalton and Breathless I believe the beach is crowded at Royalton because it is shared with Memories - and the water at Breathless (and EPC) might be too rough. Also neither hotels have sunbeds with cushions, same with Riu Palace Bavaro. I think Ambar and IBG (might stretch the budget if convinced) might be too quiet in the evenings? I have also briefly considered The Reserve at Palma Real but I was put off by the location at the back of the resort, away from the beach and cost.

Hmmm too much choice for someone as indecisive as me! Sorry for the long post.

Thank you for your help and advice.

The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real is not adult only. In fact, it's an upscale resort geared toward families. Royal Service is their adult only section, but most of the amenities are shared with the family sections.

If you don't like the fact that Secrets Royal Beach has restaurants at Now Larimar, then you won't like Royal Suites Turquesa. Secrets has 3 a la cartes and a buffet. RST has 2 restaurants, with the remainder in the other three family resorts.

Majestic Elegance Club is an adult only section, but that means some pools, lounges, and a section of beach - not the restaurants, theatre, etc.

The water is rougher at Excellence and Breathless, but in both cases, there are calm areas. I don't know about Breathless, but the loungers around the pool, and on the Excellence Club beach have cushions, and there are lots of beds with mattresses on the beach and around the pool. Both of these resorts are entirely adult only, and have many restaurants, with no reservations required. All amenities, including entertainment are adult only.

The beach at Ambar is crowded. Not as crowded as the main portion of the Bahia complex, but still crowded. Also, some of the amenities are shared. It's the biggest resort in the country, in terms of rooms, with a tiny beach.

Iberostar Grand Bavaro is very nice. It's a bit on the posh / glitzy side for my tastes. I prefer a more tropical vibe. It's also typically more expensive. They have 4 a la cartes and a buffet. Reservations required for the a la cartes. You can dine at the other three Iberostar resorts.

Of these, the calmest waters would be at Secrets. I think ground floor rooms at resorts have a higher risk of being musty.

jiggly, Would suggest You take at look at the Bahia Ambar, which is Adults Only, throughout the resort (beach, pools, and restaurants). It is ranked 7th of 102 resorts, and is moderately priced. It has a great beach, cleaned every early morning by the staff. The main pool is also terrific, with wait staff at the pool, and on the beach. The food is very good to excellent at the ala cartes, and the buffets, btw the buffets at the beach is open air, so You can enjoy taking in the sights, and fresh air. There is nightly entertainment at the main Lobby, live band playing, and if want more lively fun, you can take in the Sports bar, Karaoke, small casino, and a late night Disco. Suggest you read some of the reviews, and compare to others that have what you are looking for. Best Wishes, Leo & Sue

Thank you both for your advice. I don't mind using the restaurants at Now or at the other Palladium resorts but I just didn't want to go there most evenings for entertainment as well. On the other hand the Palladium complex would give us a number of options for entertainment which could suit. Ha, now I must sound like I am contradicting myself.

I will look again at Excellence and maybe the Ambar.

Really appreciate your guidance. Thanks.

We just spent 10 nights at RST, our second time there. Regarding the question on evening entertainment, there is none at RST. None. The other Palladium lobbies have live music most nights, however it ends pretty early- around 10:30pm I think. If you are looking for lots of evening entertainment, RST is probably not the best choice.

Some of the eating and drinking venues at ME are adults only or club level only, for all meals. Pretty good entertainment-and varied.

we love the RST and even though there is no evening entertainment we find we hang out at the main pool bar after dinner as they play music and we usually find someone interesting to talk to , it not we just enjoy each others company. yes we could head to the sister properties for live music or shows but we are really not that interested in it ( and we do tend to stay up until at least midnight when the main pool bar closes, we may then head to the lobby which is open until 1 am,. While the RST only has 2 restaurants we find the menu quite varied and actually in our last 2 1 week trips have only eaten there for dinner, and actually on the terrace of the royal 2 restaurants they have live music about 3 nights a week so if we are there when there is live music we will linger on the terrace for a while.
