Spending Money

Hi there,

Myself and my partner are travelling to Ocean Blue and Sand in June 14 and I wondered how much money spending we should take and was it best to take a currency card as opposed to cash. We are looking at doing some excursions, horse riding, snorkelling and boat trips etc.

Many Thanks and Oh I can't wait so I hope all pretty good!

If paying for an excursion through the hotel, you can use your credit card or bank card safely. If buying on the beach use cash as some have mentioned you may want to book with a deposit and pay the remaining when you show up for the days events. Some excursions are bookable before you depart, online, for some thats the only way to make your reservation (ahead of time).

If using credit card or bank card, notify them prior to travel so that they don't freeze your account or notify you with a suspected fraud alert.

Some will accept cash upon arrival, you might want to account for that when you calculate what you need to bring. On top of day trips, will you be shopping? And what for? Will you be leaving the resort to go into town? Take a taxi anywhere? To a casino? Thats all cash.

Tipping is a hot topic on the forum, a few bucks here and there, is not mandatory, but so appreciated, we take 100 in ones. Others can tell you how they divie it up but housekeeping, minibar replentisher, bartender, bell boyz, porter at the airport... it's all up to you. Hope the ideas helped.

Hi thanks for your reply, would you reckon 100-150 GBP per day be ok?

Depending on your choice of excursions, yes. We either book in advance and take the needed cash seperately, or have in the past booked on my card. After so many years I no longer bring back the souvenirs from the beach, just some rums, and a day or two shopping/ drinking off premise. Tips included, that should be just fine! Have a great trip! We have been to OB&S and love it!

£100 to £150 per day seems a lot - depends how many excursions you want to do which can be expensive for what you get.

Best souvenirs are rum, cigars, coffee.

<<< We are looking at doing some excursions, horse riding, snorkelling and boat trips etc. >>>

Each excursion, 2 people, would equal the 100 per day as noted. maybe an additional 100- 150 for tips and incidentals on the days not out. (I was calculating based on the 3 trips mentioned, and counting the "etc." as at least one more. Depending on the day trip, for example boat trip, that could rum more.

I thought a good/ safe approximation?

Just asking, why would anyone ask how much money they are bringing down, just PM each other...just saying.

spending money completely depends on your personal choice of activities.

you can do cheaper priced excursions/activities like glass bottom boats or short beach horseback rides for just 25-$50.- per person, and you can do activities/excursions which cost several hundred dollars per person, like flight excursions to Samana for Whale Watching, renting aoffshore yacht for a day etc etc.

happy travels

I take $200US in ones and fives, and two cc, one I plan to use, and the second just in case of any problem with the first one.

The cc's are just for excursions, which we take rarely now, but would be booked via our travel company (Apple); and just in case some nice piece of jewelry catches my eye. Since I 've visited DR so many times, I've done most of the excursions I care to do and also have a few nice jewelry pieces already (larimar). So sometimes these cc's go unused.

The cash covers expenses enroute as well as tips at the resort.

Why would anyone ask? I'd say because they would like to know what others do, get some ideas, and share the information with the rest of the forum community.
