tanning before vacation

Does anyone go tanning prior to departure and if so, How far in advance? I'm toying with the idea because I don't want to ruin my vacation with a bad burn.

Yes, yes... Before anyone jumps in to tell us how bad it is for us.... Yeah we know.

I typically go 6 times, 3x a week for the two weeks leading up to a trip. It's enough for a base tan...not too dark but so far no burn in the tropics.

Definitely fake and bake at least 3 week before I go in the spring. Our Fall trip is usually for two weeks. In 25+ trips to the DR, I have yet to burn. P.S....I usually use 30 sunblock the entire time I am out in the sun all day. I always come back with a great tan.

Just waiting on the lectures to start.....

Winniesmom,

I always go for the "shake & bake" 3 times a week for 2 weeks prior to departure - prefer the stand up units - just to keep me "finely tuned" and I bring the bubbas with me - they prefer the tanning beds ! LOL !

I agree ... you don't have to look like the furniture but a burn is nasty...My mother is a Ginger or was...and i don't really tan more like redish.. I only do 4 sessions for 4 to 5 min ...with one hand on the junk ... some parts stay white all the time :-)

Best way to prevent a "hurting" bad burn is just don't stay in any direct sun at the beach or pool, any longer than 20-30mins and apply a HIGH # sunscreen twice a day. Thought I was being brave my first visit ten years ago not using any sunscreen wanting a Nice tan, being of Irish/Italian/Portugese descent, medium complexion, and WOW was my forehead was peeling by day 4, even my feet got so burned and swollen I had trouble putting on my dress shoes for the evenings. Motto of the story, PLAY SMARTER, NOT HOTTER ! Best Wishes, Leo & Sue
