Cheaper to book excursions beforehand or when you get there?

Heading to Majestic Elegance for a week in August and wanted to do a couple of excursions while we're there (specifically the dune buggies and catamaran) -- will it be cheaper to book these online now or through the resort after we arrive?

Pretty sure all those tours are a set price. You won't be booking through the resort though, but rather with your tour company rep. I'd book them when you're there - that way you can even decide the day before. You don't want to schedule something off resort, only to find out you're missing out on something at the resort that you want to enjoy.

OK I thought I read a review here that said they were cheaper when you arrive than online but maybe I'm mistaken (or maybe they were). Other thing I was thinking is waiting until we arrive also gives us the benefit of waiting to see what the weather is like before committing to anything. Thanks for the help!

cheaper or more expensive does not depend on booking location, it depends on with whom you book.

you will always get the best price/rates when booking with the owner/outfitter of a Tour/Activity directly. as they are not spending their days sitting at a hotel tourdesk(and impossible to sit at all, lol), today's internet times best way to get in touch is the internet, research and boo online.

but careful, there are online the same many pirates selling tours as they do walking on the beach, they also have tablets and Data SIM Cards todays, lol. so make always sure to go on a Touroutfitters website, NOT on a salessite like offered by the touroperators or the many reselling websites like offered by almost all transfer sites. get in touch with the outfitter directly means you get all info about a tour as real first hand info, no communications around 20 corners necessary, and as there is no middlesman/reseller involved you get the best available rates as there is no need to pay any of the usually outrageous 40-70% Tour Sales Commissions.

happy touring

almst impossible to gain any advantage in case of the weather due early or late booking.

very most exursions are anyways not available to be booked today late afternoon to be done right away tomorrow morning, popular excursions book several days and some very popular ones with limited amount of spaces book even many weeks ahead of time, so you need to diiffer depending what tor you are interested in.

even if a tour is available for booking today/this morning with space available for after tomorrow morning, how could you know today what the weather will be like in 2 days then on your tourday? it can and does change from ne extreme to an other within a few hours, and anyways, heavy rain at your resort and you would not book a tour to Saona Island which is at that same time under clear blue skies? or bright sunshine at your hotel, so you book a Truck Safari, just nowhere at the hotel any weather update shows the heavy rainfals coming down over the countryside/lil mountains where that tour takes place. really not worth the hassle to plan things late just to try to guess on the weather which finally will anyways be what it wants, and it can not be forecasted for each single area where the many different tours take place, not even just a couple days ahead of time, often not even for the very next morning.

and then there is of course the number of excursions which anyways book up weeks in advance, if interested in such activities then you need to book far ahead of arrival time.

have fun

Good advice Mike!

Booking directly with the company that offers it will be the best price.

Many online sites out there. 3rd party or travel company sites.. They tack on commission (they want a cut to) so more expensive.

Same as at the resort in the lobby at the tour rep desks... they add commissions on as well so it will be more then booking directly with the company.

Down at the pool/beach/water sports center at most resorts you can haggle the price with the excursion seller... It would still will be more then booking directly with the company "BUT" you can likely get the trips cheaper then what you would pay up at the lobby with the tour reps who have fixed prices... Example a trip might be $80 with the company, tour reps at lobby selling it for $105, excursion sellers at pool/beach/watersports center you can haggle the price to maybe $90.

Take note -

Not all trips can be booked at resort... Some can only be booked online directly with the company offering it like Punta Cana Mikes Dominican Adventures and Mikes Marina Fishing.

Other more "semi - private" trips that take small groups should also be booked online with the company and well in advance as spots fill up fast.

The standard larger group trips it's fine to book while your in PC be it at lobby or down at the pool...

These days most resorts have internet.. so if you know what a price is online directly with the company (and your just not sure what day you want to go)... then you could always check out the price at resort/pool area....and if it is significantly more.. then just book the trip online or call the company directly to book for whatever price.

We rarely do excursions, we mostly just talk about doing them. Once we're there, lounging on the beach, drinks in hand, we get very lazy. The few we have done, we've found that the beach vendors are a lot lower in cost than the tour reps in the lobby. So we try to wait till last minute because we don't want to move our lazy butts off the beach. :)

Is grayline tours DR a good company to book through? We are wanting to do a catamaran/snorkeling excursion.

We stayed in May at Occidental Grand Punta Cana. We found we could bargain the price down on almost every excursion, especially if there are a few of you, the weather is no so good, etc. No guarantees, but if you are good at negotiating it could work. P.S. Do NOT book a horseback riding trip as it is practically animal abuse, the horses are skeletal thin, worked hard in the heat.
