One day on cruise ship...where to snorkel or what to do?

We will have one day in Samana in mid december and wonder where there is good snorkleing and how hard it is to get around? OR if YOU had one day, would you do something else and not snorkel? Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Hi, I live on the Samana Peninsula. If you like beaches, you might get a cab and go to Playa Rincon. A RT ride for up to 10 shouldn't be much more than $100 U.S. I wouldn't pay for a snorkeling excursion, as the snorkeling here isn't very good. Diving CAN be okay, but in mid-Dec. the water is open stirred up. The reefs aren't all that colorful, and there aren't very many fish either. Take you own gear on the off chance you'll get a good day. The best snorkeling at Rincon is on the right side of the beach (when facing the ocean), where the more established restaurants are. There's a hill behind one of the restaurants, and if you look out from there to the big point of land, Cabo Cabron, off in the distance, you'll see where the reef is. Or ask. The other end of the beach, about a half hour walk away (!) has some restaurants of the blue tarp/flotsam variety, and a cold, freshwater river you can rinse off in after swimming. You might want have your cab driver take you to Las Galeras as well, to see the town. There are a few decent (not tacky) stores where you can buy nice jewelry, etc., and the scene at the public beach, where there are 5 or 6 restaurants run by Dominican women together under one big roof, is fun. There's music and dancing, coco locos, pina coladas, etc. A few vendors of jewelry. You can walk for a long way to the right, even past the beautiful beach at the all-inclusive hotel. If you've never seen whales up close, you might want to book a trip with one of the large, reputable companies that gives an informative tour, though at times, they haven't yet arrived in mid-Dec. If you like horseback riding or hiking, there is a nice waterfall in El Limon. Hope this helps you enjoy your brief visit to the Peninsula.
