Getting to Samana from SDQ

Seeking advice on how to get to Samana from SDQ.

Seems as though most hotels will do an xfer from POP however those roadways have been reported as treacherous, with travelers getting motion sickness. Hotels in Samana recommended flying into SDQ and taking the highway to Samana, siting better road conditions.

How long of ride is it to Samana from SDQ via bus/van? How much does it cost? How about a helicopter xfer? Cost?

bus.... http://www.caribetours.com.do/site/portada/

the last bus for samana leaves at 4;30pm and the bus terminal is downtown SD and will be a $30-$50 taxi (30 plus minutes depending on traffic) so trying to catch one from the airport will be risky IMO.

flight... make sure if you prebook a flight that it leaves from and arrives back to SDQ as there are a few other smaller airports north and west of SD that many of these flights use. most arrive in samana at el portillo airport which is convenient to las terrenas but not to the other towns(samana and las galeras)

private transfer... this is the best bet if you arrive late to sdq(2pm or later as most from US do) the road is very good TO samana but the roads once in samana are not so good (much road construction going on as we speak so maybe will get better! :) I would first ask the resort or hotel at which you are staying for their rate as this is usually as good as you will find. we paid the transfer service at takeoff(http://takeoffweb.com/id2.html) around $200 but rudolfo is an excellent driver and is knowledgable of the region and will whisk you away from the airport like a rock star :) i have found rates as low as $160 but this was quoted to me by a local car rental place www.patricia-rent-a-car.com/us/index.htm when i asked about renting a vehicle from them and not sure if it is a service they offer or just to customers, but this tells me it can be done for this price. part of me wishes there were direct flights to samana from the US but it is nice to vacation in a place with no other americans(no offence) and the hassle of getting there ensures this :) good luck and happy travels, if you know the hotel or resort you will be staying it may help to decide the best route for you, ben

Thx for the info.

It seems like charting a plane is the way to go. Especially considering the nominal cost difference, approximately $125, between a taking private car which will take 2.5hrs or the 30 min flight.

Ben, no offense taken. The lack of American that visit Samana is the one of the major draws for us.
