Coincidentally, I am considering the same two places (but different hotels). Went to St. Lucia several years ago and absolutely loved it! Amazing lush tropical landscape, mountains, rainforest - lots of hiking and exploring to do. Since we typically go to a different island each summer, I am looking into Grenada because the topgraphy looks similar. I can say that beaches on St. Lucia were just okay and not great, and Grand Anse on Grenada looks more like the smooth white sand kind. Usually the more lush islands are the volcanic ones that don't have great beaches while the long powder soft white sand beaches are on the flat islands that would bore me. I guess it all depends on what you like. I'd be curious to see how others respond to your question to help me with my own vacation planning!

Hello Abeloff,

I've been hesitant to answer since I haven't been to St. Lucia in over 10 years, but... I've been to many islands, and these are my favorite ones. It's a tough decision. Both are green, lush and beautiful, and both hotels are on lovely beaches - very similiar. I just returned from Grenada, and The Coyaba, and loved it. It was my fourth trip to Grenada, but my first at the Coyaba. I would highly recommend it!

Hello

We did this last year, though not staying at the Rex Royal(stayed at Coconut Bay in the south)

We preferred Grenada but still loved St Lucia, both are well worth visiting.

Loved the friendly people, great beach(grand anse) the whole laid back, less commercial aspect of Grenada and loved the Coyaba.

St Lucia has similar topography, and enjoyed the volcanos, waterfalls and the rainforests.

As we stayed on the Atlantic side, there was obviously no comparison to the beaches and water activities, with Grenada.

To sum up, Grenada is high on the list of return visits with St Lucia a bit further down.

Not much help, but hope it helps a little.

This is too funny! I logged on to post the exact same question. Went to Barbados last year and used the forum to help make plans, which was very helpful. We are trying to decide between Coyoba and Bay Gardens in St. Lucia. How can we choose???? I like the idea of a nicer beach, but Grenada looks terrific for hiking and exploring. Help!

Do both like we did. 1 week at each, LIAT flights between islands. Then you get the best of both islands.

Whilst both islands are volcanic, the southern topography of Grenada is vastly different to St Lucia.

St lucia is like a teardrop or an oval with the most excellent beaches being on the west coast in Rodney Bay or down at the Pitons. In contrast the southern coast of Grenada has numerous fingers of land each with their own little/large beaches (depending on which one you are at) and each with varying levels of services.

For example you have True Blue (True blue restaurant and hotel - not a great beach at all but great food); Prickly Bay (Waterside Tiki Bar and Pizza restaurant and nic beach with loads of sailing boats anchored); Clarke's Court Bay (no beach but nice little marina - no services just yet but they are on the way); Calivigny (Le Phare Bleu Marina and reastaurant - good food, pool, little beaches and great staff);La Sagesse (fabulous beach with river running into it, restaurant) and then on up the East coast to Bathway, Levera and I could go on.

We stayed at the Rex in St Lucia and got married at Ti Kaye a few bays down. The Rex needed a touch up but the staff made up for it - The beach was nice and there were good amenities near by. The Coyaba i would say is of a better quality on a fabulous beach - two miles of sand and has local shops and restaurants nearby.

Great things to do and see on the island. However, Grenada has just as much lush tropical rain forest, sulphur ponds for facials ;>), Mona Monkeys to feed at Grand Etang; turtle watching at LEvela (get the right month of course). I would say Grenada is probably about 10 years behind St Lucia in terms of commercialisation and about 20 behind Barbados and that is its charm. It is catching up and starting to put in the infrastructure to develop more for the tourist to do but at the moment it is safe, beautiful, relaxing and gets my vote every time.

Oh Grenada - sorry, biased opinion here but my partner who has travelled extensively and to Grenada for the first time last year, summed it up: "some places, have beautiful beaches, some great food, some lovely sights, some friendly people.... but Grenada has it all!
