Barbed Wire Fencing

I hope this question doesn't sound too ignorant from a stupid American, but how common is barbed wire fencing surrounding properties? Should we be worried if the villa we are considering is surrounded by it? Or is it just to keep folks from walking on the property to the beach?

Just to qualify, in the countryside, people sometimes put a few strands on the top of tall fences round their orchard to keep the kids out really , its not going to stop anyone determined, but in the better areas people often dont fence at all, as it doesnt look good, and theres almost no crime. Nice bars on doors and windows are used as it means you can leave the windows open and be secure but you see this on houses that have "outdoor living rooms" too, and nothing gets taken.

And to clarify, it's a very tall chain link fence with barb wire at the top.

Theres a major nightclub there, maybe that causes problems. NB that place might bother you on friday and saturday nights. Theres no road at the back of that beach so it wouldnt be to generally prevent people getting to the beach over the land, but maybe the owner has disputes with his neighbours or has been broken into, but a fence wouldnt stop burglary. Maybe you could ask him or his agent. It isnt normal, there are loads of houses by other beaches without fences.

I don't even remember noticing many properties with barbed wire fencing. I would say it's not the norm.
