Shopping for food in Guadeloupe

We are planning to stay in Guadeloupe for 9 days in Jan 2013. We have a full kitchen and would like to purchase food? I heard that there are outdoor markets to shop in to get fresh seafood and produce. Where are they located? We are staying in Deshaies but have a car.

Thank you so much!

Hi there,

PTP has a daily market near the bus stand. It being the main fisheries harbour it's also the best place for fresh seafood. Deshaies probably has a smaller market 1-2 days of the week, can't give the exact details but you can inquire locally.

All the best,

Thank you so much for the information. Is the produce expensive? Is it good?

For Caribbean standards we found Guadeloupe, and Martinique, expensive; they have more imported from Europe (France) than nearby indepent-country islands. Quality is okay; esp. for fresh produce they have to comply to all EU standards which are quite strict.

All the best,

Hello,

One of the best thing about Guadeloupe is fresh fish. You'll love it so much, you'll want to have it everyday!!! Fish is basically available everywhere. Beside the supermarket, you have small fish markets in the villages, just ask around.

You also have a big market in the town of Basse Terre if you don't want to go to Pointe a Pitre. Enjoy your stay in Guadeloupe.

Check out the feature film ELZA shot in Paris and Guadeloupe. Website: www.elzathemovie.com

I has received great review in the New York Times and you'll see some beautiful landscapes: …nytimes.com/2012/…

Thanks!
