Villa Rentals

Hi, I'm hoping someone can help out here with some general info. We have never been to Jamaica but normally when we travel to the Virgin islands we rent private villas. My husband is worried about security and crime in Jamaica after a friend sent him the State Dept. warnings..houses broken into, assaults, robberies, and so on. Are there any areas to avoid or things we shouldn't do, or any areas that are more secure than others? Is it really not as bad as they make it sound? We have been looking at Silver Sands any other suggestions?

First and foremost - Jamaica is not as bad as people make it out to be. Use common sense, don't flaunt cash or bling, and keep your wits about you - you will be fine.

I was going to suggest Silver Sands, but it looks like you are already considering it. We have stayed in Silver Sands 3 times now. Going back in August too. This is a very safe villa complex. Only one entrance - and it is guarded 24/7. Guards also patrol on foot round the clock. Absolutely gorgeous beach. Beach bar and grill right there. They also have a villa mart too. We order the first two days food about a week or so before we leave. First meal is ready and waiting and the refrigerator is full of cold beer.

Most villas come with a staff of two - a cook and a housekeeper. Be sure to sample all that delicious Jamaican cuisine.

Another plus for Silver Sands is the huge amount of things to do that are close by:

Dunns River Falls

Mystic Mountain

Dolphin Cove

Martha Brae Rafting

Golf

Outameni Experience

Turtle River Falls and Gardens

You can arrange transportation packages directly through Silver Sands too. Sit back and let someone else do the driving.

one of the safest places in jamaica is treasure beach, on the south coast of jamaica, approx 2 hours from montego bay

a great place if you are into chilin and just relaxing, maybe taking a boat ride up the black river and a couple of drinks at the pelican bar

you can choose a luxury property such as mar blue or you may perfer any number of villas to rent, most come with staff, ie. cook and a grounds/pool man

check it out.... http://treasurebeach.net/guide/

Silver Sands if you wanted a gated neighborhood, Treasure Beach if you ant an area that doesn't need gates :)

There are luxury and basic villas all over the island and few are off by themselves, most are in a community like TB or with other villas like SS.

One major difference between renting a villa in Jamaica and doing so in the USVI is that the villas are all staffed with cook, housekeeper, gardener...and sometimes security, bartender, waiter. For the same price, more or less.

Thanks for all the suggestions. After our 2 weeks in Bequia in May ( a new island for us) We wanted an easy quick get away so we booked Silver Sands,Kamarr Villa for the first week in Dec. Hopefully it's a nice as it looks.
