Warning! Luggage theft Montego Bay airport

We just returned home from Jamaica to our bags having been ransacked and several necklaces and sunglasses missing. Seeing some older forums with similar posts I figured I'd start a new thread.

It was mostly high-end costume jewelry (eg: Stella & Dot) but still makes me angry. They took their time too, because it was in a jewelry roll inside an inner zipped pocket inside my suitcase. Not so easily found.

Thank goodness for insurance but still a pain in the rear. Don't trust anything is safe when you check your bags here. We travel 4-6 times a year and have never experienced this.

A good reminder to all not to pack valuables in checked luggage.

Are you sure it happened at MBJ and not at arrival in Canada or a connecting hub?

Ohliz is so correct....we carry any items of monetary or sentimental value in our carry-ons.

It probably did not happen in MBJ....likely your outgoing airport as they have plenty of time to go through your stuff. Sorry that happened to you...,that stinks!

Stacy: there was another post months ago about a woman who also had her very expensive sunglasses stolen out of her checked luggage at Sangster. I think they were Chanel or Fendi ($500 a pop). Anyway, I always carry mine with me in either my carryon or on my face..as well as any minimal jewellery I take on vacay. At least your things were insured!!! Live and learn...thanks for the warning.

Yeah. It is hard to say where it happened because you didn't see it happen. I suspect it happened in Canada too.

I'm very sure it happened at MBJ. They had our bags for 3 hours whereas our bags were already off the turnstile in Calgary when we came through the Nexus line in Calgary (about 10 minutes from the plane landing). We had no connecting flights.

Given the other forums out there re: the same type of thefts from MBJ, it's pointing that way.

We are NOT new to travelling... we have property in Belize. Guess we just got a little too trusting and let down our travel guard.

Stacy: since you are a fellow Calgarian I am just curious as to which airline flies directly from Sangster to Calgary? Sunwing?

Stacy: UT OH...I have read horror stories about Sunwing. Think we will stick with Westjet even though we have to stay in Toronto for a night!
