Cuba vs Jamaica?

Anyone been to Cuba as well??

We are torn over where to go for vacation this year. All of us have been to mexico and liked it, but would like to try a different country.

We are a group of 4,late 20's, early 30's, couples.

Anyone that has been to both, what are the pros and cons of each?

I've been to Cuba once and Jamaica 25x. Cuba is 'ok' but not at all similar in any way. The only thing that makes it more marketable for many is that it is very inexpensive. Jamaica hands down for me.

We have been to a number of caribbean locations including Cuba twice and Jamaica 7 times. We have travelled to Jamaica 7 times because it is in our opinion the best.

Cuba;

Pros - cheap and easily accessible from the east coast of Canada

- Our time in Havana was amazing from a history and culture perspective. Amazing city

Cons - very resort oriented and the food (local and resort) not very diverse

Jamaica -

Pros- it has a rhythm and idiosyncrasies that appeal to us. The best people and a food and culture we have not found on any other island

Cons - it has a rhythm and idiosyncrasies that do not appeal to all. As strange as this seems it took a couple of trips to "fall in love". We have taken friends and met people there and our impression is it is a love it or leave it place. I think you either get it our you don't.

We love it. Give it a try but be sure to venture outside the resorts.

Jamaica -

More diversity in the land

Better weather year round

Better food overall

Better quality water

Better communication between locals and visitors

More outgoing people

More tropical

I prefer the culture and music and rum in Jamaica over Cuba.

I'd pay more to go to Jamaica EVERY time.

Blessings and respect.

Everyone says Jamaica is more expensive.

I've found comparable resorts (a 4 star in Jamaica- Iberostar Rosehall Beach, and a 5 star in Cuba -Melia Las Americas), for relatively the same price..

Is it more expensive to do things in Jamaica? (ie. arranged excurions, etc)

It used to be that Jamaica was more expensive but I seem to be able to find deals in Jamaica now that are comparable to Cuba. I am not sure why. Maybe all the new rooms in Jamaica in the last few years?? It is nice to see the price in Jamaica come down but it was always worth the extra money for us to go to Jamaica.

We have been to Jamaica for the past two winter holidays and this winter we tried Cuba. I am already looking for next year in Jamaica for all the reasons BP,ColdInNB and Steve stated. I spent the entire week comparing and found altho the hotel and people were great they weren't Jamaica! We are definitely going back to Jamaica next year and taking two couples who haven't travelled anywhere before. The travel slogan is so right "Once you go, you'll know!"

Cuba v. Jamaica. I have been to Cuba many times and have covered about 2/3rds of the island. I don't think that you can compare both islands. They are entirely different. Cuba is more or less a communist/socialist type of country where everything is controlled and the workers in the tourist industry are very professional and the people have the highest respect for tourists. The island can offer you history from way back in the past to the present. Very historical and amazing in every respect if you like that type of thing. Beaches there were fine but I found that Varadero beaches were the best that I have seen, that does not say that Jamaica does not have nice beaches.

Jamaica is going to be similar in some ways to other W.I. islands although not the same. People are free to do what they want and you will find them completely different from the Cubans. You will also find the housing, cities, towns, etc., completely different from those in Cuba. There will be no language barrier when they are talking to you but as soon as they turn away, they will speak patois with their fellow Jamaicans because they feel more comfortable doing so, so don`t be offended. Depending on which resort you stay at, you will get the type of service that you pay for. If you want to be free to go anywhere without being on a tour bus with a tour guide and take a taxi and explore the island you are free to do so as you would do at home. Jamaica is much smaller than Cuba so you can explore the island in less hours. You will experience more of a typical Caribbean island feel, lots of music and food and there are lots of places to go. Re: the food, it is not bland like in Cuba, it is spicy and the fruita are sweeter. People will be friendly, more relaxed and will move at a slower pace but that is the typical island style, we don't like rushing around, at least I don't. Just make sure you carry some money for exploring. I am sure you will have a blast. Why not try it.

Jamaica - hands down. Heading there tomorrow in fact! Its our 4th trip to Jamaica, been to Cuba once and really no comparasin. We found Cubans not really outgoing or overly happy. Looked like they couldn't wait to get off shift. Jamaicans dance to their own beat. They slow it down and don't take life too seriously. Love Jamaica, and I leave in about 11 hours!!!

Respect!

I'd choose Jamaica over Cuba ! Jamaica's food is flavorful, great variety, nicest people, beautiful places to visit on the island.

We're tempted to go to Cuba but have not heard many positive things about the food(bland, no diversity) so therefore we still have not been to Cuba. At some point, we are still must visit Havana.

We'd rather pay the extra money and go to Jamaica.

I think that people also love Cuba because of the "cheap" prices of all-inclusives.

I'd choose Cuba because you won't have to deal with any of those annoying Americans.
