Safe??

I am hearing some conflicting information about the safety of travel to Montego Bay. My travel agent is pushing Negril, but I am leaning towards Montego Bay. We are a family with adult children and generally stay on the resort. Would love to hear from some seasoned travelers. We are from the Midwest USA!

Stay around other groups of tourists. Don't wander off by yourself and stay in after dark and you will probably have a fun, safe vacation.

You will be perfectly fine. Jamaica is as safe as anywhere for tourists. Just use your common sense when traveling outside the resort. The resort areas are quite safe.

We stayed in Montego Bay three years ago, and we're returning in November. We never left the resort, so we felt perfectly safe. I choose Montego Bay because of quick airport transfers. I think there's nothing worse than a long drive after flying all day.

Really not ominous at all. Populated areas are safe to walk day and night. And that includes anywhere you'd be likely to go. Of course you don't want to go down dark alleys far from the crowds at night, but there really isn't anywhere you'd be wise to do that. You'd really have to go out of your way to find yourself in a place you shouldn't be.

Montego Bay, for the most part, is safe day and night. There are area where you wouldn't want to wander on your own. But it's about the same for any city you may visit. Negril isn't as big, but the same holds true. Use common sense, don't wonder off with someone you just met, etc., etc.

But where ever you end up deciding to stay, definitely venture off the resort. Jamaica is a great island with a lot to offer and to see.

Happytraveller5, what does telephone scams have to do with safety when visiting Jamaica?

Stop trying to hijack the reason for this post.

Cherri-Missouri, Jamaica is definitely safe to visit and its worthwhile to come off the resort to explore the beauty of the country and its culture. Just use common sense as the others have already commented on.

If you choose to stay on the resort that's your choice, either way you will enjoy your vacation.
