All You Old Timers who have travelled to Negril many times..

I am planning on going to Negril in early May. The last time I was there, unfortuneately, was in 1993! Who can tell me how much it has changed?! I have heard the old road from MoBay is gone and replaced with a new non bumpy road? What else? Hopefully, it has the same laid back vibes and not taken over by commercialism too bad? I don't do all-inclusives. I actually am a timeshare owner at the NBCC. Why haven't I been back? Financial. Marriage, divorce, changed jobs, opened a business, closed a business....blah, blah. But I plan on going back every year from now on! Your insight would be helpful to prepare me for the shock, I guess.

The area around NBCC is very much the same as it was in 1993 with a few new smaller resorts between NBCC and the roundabout and T-Water being closed now for many years. The biggest change will be all of the AI resorts from the start of Bloody Bay to Swept Away (now Couples Swept Away). Many more vendors along the road, beach husslers, a little new paint on some places, but otherwise it's still a very similar vibe. NBCC looks identical.

Forgot to mention the road traffic, it's twice as busy now.

The main road has been paved, newer cars (Russian ones are gone), Big Scotia Bank, ATMs everywhere, more gas stations, exchange rate (what was it in 93?), Bloody Bay...well forget it.

I can't say that I miss the old Lada cars but sure do miss the old double decker bus at DeBuss.

Other things that have changed:

A LOT more very young working girls at the reggae shows.

A LOT more guys wearing dreads and passing themselves off as rastas.

More good places to eat and party.

Much fewer topless women.

I'll post again if I come up with a few more :)

BTW kpsmilin08, have a look at negrilinfo.com and make sure you check out the New Negril Map. It's an eye-opener that really shows you everything.

Thanks everyone so far!

Blues Pirate, I knew you'd be able to reflect back for me. I did see the map and couldn't believe it! That's why Iposted the question. Internet cafes were non-existent then!

Crazdtow, Unfortuneately , I only own the right to one week per year. Week 18, usually the 1st week in May. The NBCC is getting out of the timeshare biz, so they told me. When I bought it ( it was a foreclosure so got it cheap!) it was only for 25 years then it is converting to a non timeshare. Maybe when that time comes...

Streamertail, The main beach road is paved? It wasn't as I recall in 93. Dusty... The exchange rate back then was 22:1 and I thought that was crazy. Now it's almost 70:1. Too bad.

The one other thing you will notice right away is the change to MoBay airport. It's really new and improved in both arrival and departure areas. There are a lot more shops now on the second floor of departure. No more waving window for travelers coming and going like the old days. I sort of miss the nostalgia of that and of deplaning outside on the tarmac where you would get that first rush of tropical air.

West End doesn't look very different. Except Rick's was redone after a hurricane (has a pool and such) and Rockhouse got bigger and took over the Pickled Parrot property.
