Here is a list of some of things I miss about Negril ...

Here are some of things I'm longing for since returning six weeks ago:

-- Morning walks on the beach spotting sting rays before the crowds settle in

-- Leisurely floating on my raft in the afternoons on Bloody Bay

-- The warm, breezy nights

-- The sounds of tree frogs and the gentle lapping of waves as I go to sleep

-- The unmistakable smell in the air. You know it's Jamaica

-- Going back and forth in a dizzy whirl from the hotel pool to the ocean and to the food stand with my delirious daughters, Ginger, 5, and Tiana, 3.

-- The smiles and greetings from all the wonderful locals

-- Jerk chicken. Jerk chicken. Jerk chicken. (And dumplings and Ox Tail and Grace ketchup)

-- Enjoying several mugs of Red Stripe and perhaps a surruptitious smoke as I chat with fellow tourists from such places as Canada, New York City, London and small-town Kansas

-- Relaxing in the hotel lobby watching the tourists check in and seeing how excited they are despite a full day (and maybe longer) of travel

-- Negotiating a cab driver down from $30 to $10, and then happily chatting about our lives as he is more than satisfied for the fare

-- Stopping off at a little roadside grill and declaring it the best meal of the week -- again and again and again

-- Answering my cell phone and letting folks know I'm in Negril looking at the ocean

-- The blissful joy of plunging into the Bluehole or a waterfall pool

-- Buying little souvenirs like wood cravings and paintings and squash-shell bowls that will decorate my house for years and tinge wonderful memories

Wow, Gerry, you've been back for 6 weeks already? Time flies.

You hit it pretty dead-on with your list. Mine is pretty much the same. Here's my top 10:

1. The people, and how cool is it that they can all sing and dance and have such a beautiful spirit.

2. The feeling I get when I'm there. More spiritual, more aware, more in touch with God (sorry to sound so sappy here. Trying not to sound like a bad country song). Don't know why it affects some people this way and not others.

3. TREE FROGS!!!!

4. The sound and smell of the ocean while I'm peacefully drifting off to sleep.

5. Waking up very early in the morning, having my Blue Mountain coffee (with rum cream). Then even before the vendors are out, walking the beach, seeing the stingrays and fish so close to the shore.

6. Walking up and down the beach in the late afternoon, stopping for drinks at several places along the way.

7. Hanging out anywhere on the west end and watching the sunset.

8. Lying on the beach with a great book and casually watching people drift by.

9. Sitting on my veranda or the hot tub at night while it's raining listening to the tree frogs.

10. Raggae music!

Ya, that's a good list. I have always believed that God comes through PEOPLE, and you can really feel it from the peeps in Negril; the way they love nature and love life and have such a passion for the little things -- that's a constant God shot for me.

More:

-Being called "My Lady" everywhere I go.

-Watching the guy outside 23/7 giving the evil eye to the place, daily. Harmless, but odd.

-Sipping rum punch made from fresh fruit.

-The papaya from the fruit lady. Just unreal.

-The sunsets.

-The crash of the waves while you are in Xtabi's caves.

-Cold Red Stripe Light.

-Miss Mae. A truly amazing woman.

-The truly incredible color of the water.

-Watching the brave leap at Rick's.

-Knowing I'll be back next year.

I, too, have been there before - to Ocho Rios. We'll be in Negril in 98 days and I'm really looking forward to it. Sounds beautiful!
