Taxi vs. Tour Guide

Has anyone taken a taxi from Beaches Negril or RIU Palace Tropical Bay to do some shopping or to go to Rick's? Trying to decide if I should book someone in advance or hire a taxi driver. There will be just 2 of us.

Thanks!

Just walk out to the street and a taxi will find you in minutes or less. Resort taxi drivers will charge more than taxis cruising. Settle on a price before getting in.

Tour guide for local transfers would be overkill.

As you get more familiar with the "runnings" a route taxi is the least expensive transport.

A taxi from the Riu to town will be $5 (per couple, 1-way), and from the Riu to Rick's is $10. Be sure to confirm the price before getting into any unfamiliar cab. If you want a trusted driver, our favorite for 10+ years is Biggs at 876-410-0536. Call 30 min before you want to go for a no-hassle drive there and back.

Definitely walk OFF the resort to grab a taxi! They will find you - in seconds, literally! MUCH cheaper than the resort taxi!

Another idea is to take a look at The List in the upper right corner of this page. This is a list of good drivers that have been used by and recommended by other TA regulars. They are Red Plate and insured.

So if we are going to Rick's from RIU Palace would it make sense to go out on the street and hail a cab, or prearrange it prior to leaving home with a driver on the list? I think we just want to go out to Rick's and see sunset and watch a few divers. Not planning to stay really long. Would a driver stay and wait, come back for us when we are ready, or would we just hail another cab to go back?

You can do any of that. Any driver will wait for you for a price, or give you his cell # to call for pickup when you are ready. If you get $10 each way for 2 from Riu to Rick's you are doing very well IMO.

That trip in route taxis crammed in with others would still be about $5 each way and you'd have to change taxis in town.
