In my experience with Riu's (I have stayed at many), asking for a room upgrade while showing a $10 tip wrapped in your fingers, gets you a long way. Make sure you thank them. Consider signing up for the Riu ClubCard so you can also say you are a member. Check the room availability a few days before traveling so you can see what rooms are available. Taking private transportation to the resort also helps for you will beat the buses and there won't be a lot of other people asking at the same time. I have always had a coffee maker in our room.

Coffee makers are only standard at Palace resorts for Riu.

If you pay for an upgrade its guaranteed.if you request a complimentary upgrade upon arrival it's a request and they aren't always granted!.

We landed lucky both times, initially ground floor ocean view, second time, second floor ocean front (well, as close to the sea you could get).

Depends which Riu also OntarioBaby

Stayed at RIU a lot. Never PAY for an upgrade except maybe a little tip. Nine out of ten times, they just give it to you if you ask. All the rooms are basically the same anyway. The best rooms are of all are 1013, 1014 and 1015. If you get one of those, you're golden.
