Bring my own snorkel gear?

This is our first trip to Negril and we leave on August 6. Staying at Nirvana on the beach but would love to do some snorkeling. Any recommendations on best spots/tours...and should we bring our own gear?

if you have your own gear bring it! It doesn't take that much room, and it's only been in your mouth!!!

Same thinking here, we purchased 2 sets (no fins) in Kmart on sale for $20 a piece. Probably not the best, but for how much snorkeling we do it will work for us.

Yup - Bring your own. That way you know it'll fit and you won't wonder what germs are lurking. Good spots to go: Xtabi on the cliffs, and Booby Cay island - a short boat ride from Nirvana.

Another fave spot for snorkelling is around the lighthouse---mornings are usually calmer there....

Definitely!! as mentioned above for several reasons!

FYI, make sure to rinse well after use, the salt water can be hard on the gear :)

Bring it. The gear provided by most is not the best.

All of the above.

If you have facial hair bring a small jar of Vaseline to seal your mask properly.

PapaGeorgeNegril is sort of correct about sealing a mustache . However, vaseline breaks down the silicon seal over time. A better seal is not from a petroleum-based product (like vaseline) but rather comes from using food grand silicon gel.

Lots of sources for this kind of product like dive shops and internet retailers.
