How much time in Fajardo for family?

We are planning a trip over the holidays to PR and currently have 9nts in San Juan and 5 nights in Fajardo booked. I am wondering if I should split the time at 7nts in SJ and 7 nights in Fajardo?

We have never been to PR before and are travelling with our 5 children (oldest will be 9 down to the youngest who will be 4mths). We prefer to spend most of our time at the beach playing, swimming, snorkelling but also like to shop and eat at a good variety of restaurants.

Do I have it right with my current split or should I add a few nights to Fajardo? I have no idea what to expect with Fajardo although the few pics I have seen have been nice.

Also, would a vehicle be essential for our time around San Juan or is it relatively easy to walk if staying in touristy areas & catch a cab to go to Old San Juan, etc? We are anticipating renting for our time to Fajardo.

Thank you in advance!

You would be OK in San Juan without a car. Stay in the Condado or Isle Verde and you can walk to stores etc. You can take the Bus to Old San Juan and Cab it back. Also take a look at the west end of the island. Rincon to be specific. Very nice. YOu might want to spend a few days there.

We are staying in Isle Verde (big nice beach right?). It slips my mind right now but pretty sure that is what we have booked.

We are expecting to go to Rincon area for day trip(s). We need to limit how many places we stay for sanity sake & to make it easier for the kids. From what I have read, there is good surfing over on that side which we also like.

Thanks for the input!

I'm also planning a trip to PR and my friend told me that I probably wouldn't want to take a lot of day trips to Rincon from San Juan. He says that it's a longer drive than it looks on the map. I agree with the other poster that you should look at staying in Rincon especially if you like the beach. Rincon is known for its beaches/snorkelling but I'm not sure if there is much of a beach in Fajardo. My travel books don't really talk much about Fajardo beaches and they also don't list a lot of other things to do in Fajardo that would keep someone busy for a whole week. Plus if you wanted to take a day trip from San Juan to Fajardo it isn't that far to drive.

Figure 3 hours to Rincon from San Juan. Depends on traffic. Off hours, maybe 2+. Couple hours at least. Not really a good day trip. Seven Seas beach is in the Fajardo area and Liquillo is only about 15 minutes as is the El Yunque Rain Forest. You can go to the El Conquistador for the Casino action as well as golfing. The Snorkeling day trip leave from Fajardo. The Airport in Cieba has flight to both culebra and Vieques for about $25 each way. Or you can take the ferry for a coule bucks. The light house is worth a visit. San Juan is only about 45 minutes.

There are many half day trips or day trips you can make using Fajardo as a home base. To name a few:

A day in Vieques or Culebra beaches/ fort/museum Conde de Mirasol, etc.

El Yunque rain forrest

ATV, horse, & other attactions at Hacienda Carabali

There is a new small eco-/hotel/resort - Floriham?? in Rio Grande

Las Cabezas Reserve & Fajardo Lighthouse

Luquillo Beach, Seven Seas Beach

The Outlets (Canovanas)

Horse Racetrack

The biobay (either Fajardo's or Vieques

There is always some fair or festival going on close by

Thank you for the input everyone.

Because of our family size and childrens ages, for a vacation to be enjoyable, we have to limit how many places we stay. ;-) We are used to driving and 2-3hrs doesn't seem like a big deal to us re: Rincon. If we love that area, there is always next time. We had to choose E or W and since we are travelling w/ others, we all decided on E since we have intentions of going to Culebra & Vieques for day trips as well.

Anyhow, thank you all for the input. Much appreciated! Now we are looking forward to a great new years celebration! Anyone been in San Juan for new years?
