Puerto Rico Advice Please!!!

Hi,

It's going to be our first time in Puerto Rico and was hoping that someone could help.

My girlfriend has always done all inclusives, wants something nice, romantic, and on the beach.

I have always been the adventurer, don't want to be just part of the tourist junk, and love to see some of the culture.

Is there a place in PR that anyone thinks we could do both? I'd love a small quaint town where we could go out, eat, etc... but still a top notch hotel. Also in an area where you can go do some things without paying the huge tour fees?

Thanks

MAtt

Have a look a Rincon, www.rinconpr.com, www.rincon.org, quaint surfing town, fun beach bars, excellent restaurants, lighthouse, hiking trails, miles of empty beaches, located on the west coast, with a variety of lodging choices, from old world elegant, the Horned Dorset, to quaint oceanfront Inns of which there are many that pamper their guests, or beach houses to rent , and modern hotels like the RIncon of the Sea's. Great snorkeling, diving and fishing, excellent surf in the winter, fun happy hour sunset's, with a great mix of locals and mainlander's who have made there home here.

Take a look at Rincon Beach Resort and Hix island House (very cool!)

As far as tour fees, just book yourself directly with the operator.

Have you guys ever thought about staying at Guest Houses?

Check out Vieques, an island just off the coast of PR. We were there in March and loved it. Stayed at the Hacienda Tamarindo - wonderful place. Lots of places to eat and tons of beaches with no development - you definitely need a jeep to explore the island. Check out the island at www.enchanted-isle.com.

You could check on Paradisus Puerto Rico ALL-Inclusive Resort. That's a great resort in front of the beach, and just few minutes away from the National Rainforest "El Yunque". Also look near Rincon, Boqueron, Old San Juan or Vieques/Culebra.

For culture just outside of Isla Verde (tourist area near airport) there's a town called Piones. It's a town that many centuries and decades ago, served as a "ghetto" for the black slaves coming from Africa by the Spanish Conquerors. The beach is awesome there. Also for culture check on Vieques/Culebra or Boqueron.

Going to Old San Juan you'll learn about the history of the island and you'll visit many forts that protected the city from attacks from the english, french, dutch; such as El Morro, San Cristobal and La Fortaleza (now the oldest Executive Mansion in the Western Hemisphere).

Driving to the mountains will be another excelent trip using a map and takin the RUTA PANORAMICA (PANORAMIC ROUTE).

If you want to go shopping, just go to Plaza las Americas. It is the biggest mall in the Caribbean. It has over 300 stores including Gap, Old Navy, Macy's, JC Penney, Borders Books, Guess?, Cingular Wireless, etc... Or go to Old San Juan, Belz Factory Outlet World in Canovanas or Prime Outlets in Barceloneta.

You might find some traffic in Puerto Rico cause there is a LOT of cars out there. Using a taxi, rental car, Bus or Urban Train (METRO) will be excellent..

Have a nice trip!
