Is everything as "dressy" as it looks?

In looking at hotel websites etc. seems the dress code is pretty nice - not sure if this is just pretty pictures on websites or if the general dress code of Puerto Rico is elevated....not that I'm a slob, my husband and I just prefer the more laid back nature of places like Mexico and Hawaii and wondering if that would also include PR?

Yes, people generally dress up a bit when they go out in the evenings in PR, especially in an urban center like San Juan. Around the hotel complexes its ok to be casual. Casual elegant attire in the evenings is fine. If you want more laid-back try Culebra (extreme) or Vieques.

People dress to the beach very casual but when they are not on the beach they dress formal, semi formal or elegant casual. You definetly do not want to look like you came from the beach during nightime, it is totally out of place.

Come to PR and relax. When on vacation, you can dress as you like. SJ is a city, so it is city sleek , there are sometimes dress codes (like no shorts or sandals on men) for evenings in the fancy hotels/restaurants/casinos. But even in SJ, you will find casual places.

And there are loads of places in PR outside of SJ that will accept you wearing T-shirt and shorts anytime. If you are more casual, just stay away from fancy resorts. There are small inns, B&B and vacation rentals that will be more your vacation style.

ps- we have lived here for 8.5 years and our best is elegant casual and we get by just fine.

"...they dress formal, semi formal or elegant casual..."

Just to clarify: it all depends on the occasion. People in PR do dress up in the evenings but they do not wear tuxedos (formal/semi formal) to have a drink at a hotel lobby unless they're attending a formal event. Slacks or nice jeans, a button down shirt and nice shoes for men, and a dress and heels/nice sandals for women will do.
