Place to Stay in Puerto Rico

We are thinking of heading to puerto rico for about a week long vacation. We will be flying into San Juan but not sure if we want to stay there. We are looking for a centrally located place to stay that is close to multiple attractions including the west coast, the rainforest, biobays, and of course numerous beaches. We will also probably spend a day in San Juan. Are there any hotel/vacation rental/ resort recommendations? Also are there any particular areas to avoid and are there any other attractions to see?

You do realize PR is the size of Connecticut. It's a half day drive from the east coast to the west. Most of the things to see are on the NE coast. San Juan is probably the best base of operations for a first time visitor. The Metro San Juan area is well over a Million people. There are many hotels along the coast/tourist areas. East of San Juan are some large resorts. You can also look at apartment/condo rentals. If you want to visit Rincon, I would split the vacation, Stay in San Juan for a few days and in Rincon for a few days.

Last time I was there for 10 days and split it between a stay in Aguadilla on the Northwest coast and Luquillo to the Northeast. Best of both worlds and you can hit OSJ as you drive through (I like to drive to Catano and take the ferry across the bay).

Logistically speaking, Puerto Rico is a large island and it takes time to get anywhere. The Metro San Juan area has an excess of 2.3 million people and traffic and congestion are a nightmare most of the time. San Juan is very urbanized, complete with big city problems. That being said, you need to decide which end of the island you wish to spend time in if you do not want to stay in the San Juan environs. You have the choice of the east or west coast or you can split the vacation up between the two.
