Puerto Rico (not San Juan) for honeymooners

Would like to spend a week for honeymoon in May. Don't want the hustle and bustle of SJ. Can you suggest a great beach area away from the city that is still close to things to do like hiking, snorkeling, etc?

Rio Grande (Rio Mar), Fajardo (El Conquistador) are what you are looking for. Both resorts are close to the rainforest and have nice beaches.

Which is better for snorkeling? Is the water rougher in one or the other? Looks like a ferry is available from Fajardo to Vieques? Any idea of distance? Thanks so much

The El Con is up on a cliff and does not have a beach, so they rented an island off the east coast and run a shuttle all day. That island has been in several movies. Snorkelling is available as well as most water sports. White sand, very nice. Rio Mar is closer to San Juan and at the foot of the El Yunque Rain Forest. Beach is fair, Nice resort facitilties. Snorkelling no so good. The best snorkelling will be taking a day trip with one of the many companies out of Fajardo.

How far from Fajardo to the lighthouse near Cabo Rojo?

Rio Mar's beach is rougher. Not too rough but not calm either.

Fajardo is on the north of the east coast. Cabo Rojo is all the way on the opposite end of the island. It should be a 4 hours drive with normal traffic.

Vieques is an ideal spot for honeymooners. Especially in May.

In may there are not alot of visitors and that translates into especially empty beaches. There will be lots of privacy. Plus there is alot to do on Vieques.

Maybe spend 5 nights there and maybe two(or one) on the mainland.

But for honeymooners, Id say The W if you can afford it or rent a house with a pool. Either way, Vieques is ideal.
