San Juan Beaches?

My wife and I are planning a week long trip to Puerto Rico. We've heard the beaches near San Juan aren't that great. Where should we turn our attention to? We want great beaches with the ability to get to a town that has great authentic food. Thoughts?

Agreed, go with isla verde. If you want great beaches though, head to Vieques or Culebra.

How difficult is it to get to Vieques or Culebra if we were flying into San Juan?

Vieques Island has the combination of beautiful undeveloped white sand beaches and really good authentic local food restaurants.

The cheapest and painless way to get there is to get a taxi and take a 15 minute ride over to Isla Grande Airport and take a small plane over to Vieques. It will cost you more money if you take a connecting flight from the international airport. The flight from Isla Grande Airport is about 30 minutes.

How long is your Vacation? You could split it up. See Old San Juan, the Rain Forest etc. Drive to Fajardo and hop on the ferry, or Cieba and take the short and cheap flight. Park the car with the excess luggage and spend a couple days there. 3 nights would give you 2 full days to see the beautiful beaches.

The Metro San Juan area has an excess of 2.1 million people and all of the beaches in the Metro San Juan area are in urbanized areas. Do you want an urbanized experience or do you want to get away from it all?

If you rent a car, you can take day trips around the main island. We stayed in SJ and drove one day to Caña Gorda beach in Gúanica and back. .

The El Conquistador resort in the Fajardo area is on a cliff with a beautiful view. For a beach they rented an offshore island that is white sand and very nice. With a car you could also do some day trips around the island.
