Grocery Store

Looking for an easy place stop on the way to Rio Grande from SJ Airport to pick up some groceries. Also, do the grocery stores in PR sell liquor (vodka, rum, etc) as well?

Yes, grocery stores sell liquor here. Buy don q rum, its the best. If you are renting a car, maybe its better to buy your groceries in san juan. Otherwise, ask at a gas station as to the location. I really don't know where to tell you.

The 2 primary ways to get from San Juan to Rio Grande (with food shopping in mind) are Route 66 and Route 3.

If you take Route 3, you'll pass a number of food stores, including Econo in Carolina, WalMart SuperCenter in Canovanas, and Ralph's Food Warehouse in Rio Grande. But, you'll also hit more traffic (and lights) on this route.

If you take Route 66, you can get off at exit #14 and go to WalMart in Canovanas, and then either get back on Route 66, or continue east on Route 3.

If stay on Route 66, you can get off at exit #19 and go to Ralph's in Rio Grande, and then continue east on Route 3.

Thanks RayInPR! We are arriving around noon on a Wednesday, not sure what the traffic is like that time of day. Is one of the routes more scenic than the other, and how much of a time difference are we looking at between the two?

Route 66, end-to-end, takes 12 minutes.

The same distance on Route 3 can take 30-60 minutes, depending on traffic.

If you want a scenic route, you can take Road 187 along the coast through Piñones, and then head south on Road 188 to get to WalMart on Route 3 in Canovanas.

You can get a better idea about Route 66 in our blog ... puertoricodaytrips.com/route-66-extension/

In addition to the options cited above, there is a Pueblo right next to the airport. You can see it on the right as you on the exit ramps. Just keep taking right turns. We usually do this store on arrival. It is open 24 hours and because it caters more to travelers it tends to stock more things familiar to those from the upper 48.

My vote goes to Ralph's, either in Rio Grande or Fajardo. Both are huge an have a large selection of groceries. IMO, they have cheaper prices and fresher veggies and fruits than Pueblo, Supernax and Amigo supermarkets.
