First timers on a budget..where to go?

My husband and I are exploring the option going down to PR for about a 5 day anniversary trip, (give or take a day). We've never been and are on a budget, so the less flights we have to take to get around. We would love a nice beach, not overly crowded, but also like to go out and explore the local culture-restaurants/shops/etc. We have heard that Vieques and Culebra have the best beaches, but probably can't afford to make it over there. Does anyone have any suggestions for the next best beaches/areas to stay on the mainland? Renting a car is a possibility also. Any info is greatly appreciated!

You can find really cheap flights from MIA or FLL to SJU. You can reach the islands via Isla Grande or Ceiba airports, which are cheaper than SJU. Or if you arrive and depart on weekdays, the ferry is an option. So even if you are on a budget the islands are accessible. Look for accomodations and see if there is anything that interest you.

We rented a condo in the Playa Azul complex in Luquillo. Rented a car - very inexpensive. Getting a condo meant we could save money by eating breakfast and some lunch in the condo. It's right on the beach and very reasonable. You can take a day trip to Vieques or Culebra on the ferry. We did a snorkel rip to Culebra through East Island Excursions. Pasta y Pueblo was the best meal we had in PR and it's right in Luquillo. Other good meals were at La Estacion in Fajardo and the kiosks in Luquillo.

There are moderate hotels in PR, just have to look around. There are the Canario by the lagoon, and Canario by the sea. Also in Isla verde there are locally owned smaller hotels.

The downside , well they are not fancy furnished or have a restaurant or beach front. But they are well kept and cleaned.

Renting a condo is another option that can suit budget limits.

Rincon has many relax beaches and so beautufulllllll. You can fly to Aguadilla (BQN ) airport. Is just a 30 min drive. There are many condo rentals, try one on Corcega beach area.

If you choose Rincon, a car rental is a must!!!! Rincon have nice beaches but while you there go to Cabo Rojo's Playa Sucia.

No clue what your budget is but my husband and I stayed at the Embassy Suites in the Isla Verde area in February. Breakfast is included in the price of the hotel as well as a 2 hour managers' reception each night with free drinks and snacks. It's a very nice hotel, with a nice pool. The beach is a 5 minute walk and they have a person there to give you towels, chairs and an umbrella. The beach is very nice. You can also walk around the area to eat out.
