Itinerary planning for a Puerto Rican holiday

Hello fellow TripAdvisors! :-)

I am in the exploratory phase of planning a potential trip to Puerto rico in April 2014 (how is that for committal?!) I would be going to do the 70.3 triathlon (a half ironman) and then spending about a week with my wife and three kids somewhere on the island.

We would spend the first couple of nights at the race hotel in San Juan but afterwards would likely rent a home somewhere convenient. We would plan on renting a car and would like to experience the best family fun that the island has to offer. Our four year old twins and eight year old daughter love the beach and the rain forest so we would be very much looking to see as much of these as possible.

For those of you in the know, given what I have told you, where would you recommend looking for a rental home? What specific day trips would you suggest? Any can't miss activities? Any warnings about what not to do or waste time on?

Thanks so much in advance!

Most first-time visitors have a list that includes El Yunque National Forest, a biobay (in Fajardo or Vieques), Old San Juan, a couple beaches, Rio Camuy Caves park, a snorkel catamaran trip, and a possible "adventure" trip like ziplining, ATV or horseback riding.

Other popular trips include a stop in Guavate for lechon, Cabo Rojo in the southwest for white-sand beach and lighthouse/cliffs vistas, maybe a trip to Flamenco Beach on Culebra (snorkeling and white sand).

It all depends on what you want interests you ... figure that out, and then choose a spot to stay that is centrally located to your activities. Staying in the Luquillo / Rio Grande area puts a lot of activities within a 1-hour drive.

Check our blog for lots of DIY ideas, photos, videos, driving directions, and GPS coordinates ... http://www.puertoricodaytrips.com/ ... the info there should get you started on your planning.
