First time to PR. Small hotel

Hello, We are hoping to find a smaller hotel for a few nights in January. Any suggestions? Is the south side of the island quieter? Or, would you recommend being near Old San Juan? We are in our 50's. We like some action but mainly pool/beach side with good food and drinks.

Do you have any ideas on what you want to do (exactly) when you say "action". Any things you want to see? Are you renting a car?

We like to see local flavor such as history, music, 'watch' dancing in the evening. We could rent a car. Thank you!

Do you want a place that is beachfront? Metro San Juan is really big and urbanized with high rises. Do you want an urbanized setting? San Juan is where all the "action" is.

We prefer small hotels. I guess I misspoke saying 'action'. What I meant was 'some' night life. We like history, food and meeting local folks.

What about "beachfront"? Or does the beach matter? ... and what is your budget?

Would prefer beachfront. Bar. Small. Not a big hotel. I don't know what to wxpect for prices.

Maybe 20o a night?

PR is like no other place.

Where most places have a couple locations, some time in the same area, PR is totally spread out over the 35 X 110 mile island.

The best thing to do is go to the top of the page and click on things to do.

Get an idea of things you want, then get back to us with that list. With that we can give you good options on where to stay.

Puerto Rico really has everything but not necessarily in one place. A small hotel in Old San Juan would be a great choice if they had a pool that met your needs because it's not on the beach, but it has everything else.

When we've been there we have always wanted to be on the beach and away from the city and we loved Vieques. It is much quieter there. We also enjoyed driving around the island but in that case unless you are well informed, it is a bit random what you may find. Sometimes that adds to the fun, sometimes it's a frustration. But I can't imagine a few days in a small hotel in Old San Juan not being a beautiful vacation.

You may want to consider Rincon on the west coast. It's the anti-thesis of busy congested San Juan. They have some smaller beachfront hotels.

How long are you staying? Perhaps split your stay between San Juan and Rincon? As above, Rincon is much more laid back, would meet your requirements for beach time, but not sure about history..check out Villa Confresi Hotel, Or the Lazy Parrot there. In San Juan maybe stay in Isla Verde, check out the SJ Water and Beach Club hotel. Then you could easily taxi into Old San Juan for History, etc. Perhaps also consider Luquillo area, see the Sunrise Beach Inn there. Close to the Rain forest if interested in a hike. Also the bio bay in Fajardo could be worked into your itinerary from any these locations. Or a snorkel catamaran to Flamenco beach....as you can see, there is so much to see/do in PR that you have to focus in the area/activities that suit you best. Good luck and have fun!
