questions about el san juan resort

we have stayed at la concha 2 times and liked it. We plan on going back in May 2014.

It is more expensive this time and we are contemplating the El San Juan Resort. I have been to this hotel for drinks and walked the grounds. My concern is some of the negative comments

and how we can assure a room that will be in a good location. Also are there restaurants in walking distance from the hotel. We like hanging by the pool, walk the beach, reading, casino and basically just relaxing. thanks in advance

The only question I can answer is yes, there are restaurants in walking distance from the ESJ. Metropol is one that is close by and absolutely delicious.

Hi bonzo, If you gamble, its always best to book thru the casino. The best rooms at the El San Juan are the oceanfront lanais, don't accept poolside or garden. Otherwise, the best rooms are the odd numbered rooms on tower floors 7-9. If you have a special occasion, let them know in advance. It never pays to be harsh or demanding. The staff doesn't like it and will push back. Also in May there might be proms, which can mean some rowdy kids in the hallways, but nothing sustained or dangerous. Thewre are several excellent dining venues on site, including the new Miami Meatmarket steak house. Nearby there are several others including Plato's and La Playita Cafe.

I stayed at ESJ last December and loved it. The service is a little slow, but it's no different than service anywhere else on the island.

I recommend the rooms on the main tower. The decor is not great, but the rooms are large, and have balconies. The rooms at the older tower are larger, but are quite outdated.

There are plenty of restaurants within walking distance: there's a food court right across the street, a Chili's next to it, Metropol is a 10 minutes walk, Lupi's is less than a 5-minutes walk, and Ruth's Chris is next door at the Intercontinental, which also has a sushi restaurant. There are 2 Walgreen's within walking distance as well, and there's also a gelato shop (Piu Bello), about 5 minutes from the hotel, on the same side of the street.

A better alternative is the Intercontinental next door.

I agree with prexplorer. I like ESJ very much, but between El San Juan and Intercon, I'd choose Intercon.
