Driving from Rincon to Fajardo

Is it possible to take a scenic drive from Rincon to Fajardo on the southern coast or through the interior part of the country in one day? In other words can we get from Rincon to Fajardo without going through San Juan? We want to see more of Puerto Rico. This will be on a Friday. How long would it take without stopping? We will make stops, but I am trying to figure out if it is possible. We are a couple with a 14 year old. If it is, possible what are recommended routes?

Thanks for your input.

Yes, you can take the southern route. It will be highway most of the way, though there are some sections with traffic lights (Rd2). It will be a long drive, so leave early in the morning, as it will be dark by 6:30-7pm. Maybe 3 hours with no stops. RD 2 to Ponce, then 52 to Caguas, then 30 to Humacao and 53 to Fajardo. As an alternative, take 52 to San Juan/Carolina, then 25 and 66.

I would avoid the interior route. Those would be smaller rural roads with tons of curves, and a higher chance of getting lost.

Well, you can do the southern route as described above. Making stops in Cabo Rojo (it is a 1-2 hr detour off the route but worth it), Ponce maybe for quick stop, Guavate for lunch or Jendy's for great odd ice cream flavors,

Or you can try some sites in the middle but then go through SJ (sorry I know you said not going through SJ, but these sites are cool!)- take RT 111 to San Sebastian (see the market) and pass a roadside waterfall (Collazo). Then go to Lares for the Heladeria (crazy ice cream flavors) and then up to Arecibo on RT 10- see Cueva Ventana and then Cueva del Indio and do the shore route to Barceloneta then RT 22 to SJ, then RT 26 to RT 66 to RT 3 to Fajardo.
