Getting around Puerto Rico as two women

My friend and I are planning to spend about 5 full days in Puerto Rico and want to explore as much of the island as we can. Would it be too much of a hassle and time consuming to rely on publicos to get around? Or would you recommend a rental? How dangerous is it to drive around the island? We're looking to go on some hikes (El Yunque, the caves in the north, Gilligan's Island, etc) and possibly visit some off the beaten path areas.

Also, should we have heightened safety concerns as two Asian women in Puerto Rico? I couldn't find anything on racism (if any) in P.R.. ANY advice or tips would help, thanks!

You must rent a car if you want to go around the island. Publicos are not reliable, they are slow, and will not take you anywhere near where you want to go.

Driving around is safe. But we are aggressive drivers and not necessarily follow traffic rules.

There is no targeted racism here like you find in other countries. If you are Asian and go around speaking in a foreign language, you may get some stares of curiosity, as we do not have a large asian population. But you will be safe.

Publicos are not convenient and waste a lot of time. It is best to rent a vehicle to maximize your time.

You can feel confident and safe driving around the two of you. If you can talk English you should do find in asking directions and having a nice dinner :)

If you have driven in large cities like Chicago, NYC, or Los Angeles, you should have no problem driving around PR.

If you want to do as much as possible in five days a rental car is needed. Publicos routes are based on schools locations and businesses. Even their terminals are not near town plazas (in small towns they could be really near though).

Awesome, thank you guys so much! Looks like we'll be renting a car.

Also, does anyone happen to know what time the buses stop running? We're looking at potential flights that would arrive at 1am and I'm worried there would be no other way to get to San Juan besides via taxi.

Thanks!

There is no other way to get to SJ from the airport besides taxi. There is a bus that goes to the airport, but no bags are allowed. And at 11pm it will take you a very long time to get to your destination, but only 15mins top if you take a cab.
