Where to stay in PR

We are heading there for winter break. We want to be within walking distance of a beach, preferable one with good snorkeling. Thinking about Fajardo and would welcome feedback. Don't want to be too far from San Juan as we will be arriving in the evening and renting a car. Thanks in advance!

Fajardo is an hour drive from San Juan depending on your departure location and traffic congestion. If you still decide on Fajardo, the best resort at that end is the El Conquistador Resort. Las Casitas Village on the same property are higher end.

Stay in San Juan. Isla Verde has the best beach in the area, and several hotels are right on this beach or just a block away.

Thanks for the input. Would renting a car for 1-2 days to do the rain forest and Culebra be easy to do from Isla Verde? We prefer VRBO condo rentals to hotels, so any suggestions there would be appreciated. Is it easy to get a taxi from the airport around 10:00 p.m.?

There are plenty of car rental agencies at the airport, which is only a 5 minutes car ride from Isla Verde. The ride to Luquillo/ran forest is about 50 minutes. The ride from San Juan to the ferry for Culebra is about an hour. You would have to leave the car at the ferry parking lot as rentals are not allowed on the ferry.

As far as condos, look at Marbella, and ESJ Towers in Isla Verde. Both are on the Isla Verde beach, both get positive reviews here on TA, and both are within walking distance to the hotels, restaurants, and shops. You can find them on vrbo.com.

We are really leaning toward the clearer water/better snorkeling in the Fajardo area. Is it possible to take a taxi in the late evening from the airport to Fajardo, then rent a car there the next day? If so, how much would that cost?

Secondly, if you can't take a rental car on the ferry to Culebra, what do you do when you get there? Are there places in the area that rent snorkel equipment or do we need to bring our own?
