Holiday Inn Isla Verde vs. Sheraton OSJ

My wife and I are planning a long weekend (Wed 1/9 thru Sun 1/13) and have points available for either property. I am looking for some advice. Both get better than average marks from Trip Advisor so I guess I'm looking for some direction. We are 40 & 38 enjoy the sun, fine dining, sometimes gambling, bars (upscale), and generally just looking for some fun without the kids!! OSJ looks to be more "convenient" as far as bars, restaurants, clubs, etc but no beach....although for a 3 1/2 day trip sun and pool would be OK. What's going on in the Isla Verde district? Enough to occupy us for Th/Fri/Sat night? Not looking to spend $50 on R/T cab to OSJ either. Also, how far to the Condado area (we got engaged at Condado Plaza (?) 15 years ago.

Any advice would be most appreciated.......................

I think the newly renovated Holiday Inn in Isla verde is the best bet for you. You will be within walking distance to a beautiful beach and the Holiday Inn Pool is also very nice. There are numerous restaurants in the area and also in the hotel. They have a new restaurants in the Holiday Inn called "Colada" which has an outdoor bar and DJ for dancing fun in the evenings or one night you could walk over to the El San Juan Hotel for the casino and Brava night club or hotel lobby which also has music and dancing. There are also numerous restaurants close to the Holiday Inn, local, inexpensive food at Mi Casita or Great steaks at the Palm or Ruth Cris, all within walking distance.

Also if you want to take a day trip to OSJ, take the bus in front of the Intercon for $.75 and enjoy OSJ for the day. I think the bus stops at 9pm from OSJ.

The Sheraton does not have that much to offer and it is far away from the night life in Isla Verde.

2girls. I agree with the previous poster, stay in Isla Verde. In addition to the El San Juan ,you can go to the rooftop bar at the Water Club. The casinos at the Ritz and El San Juan are good. You could hang out at Lupi's if you like Mexican food and Plato's is a pretty cool little restaurant bar. all of the venues mentioned are right along Isla Verde Ave within 4 blocks or so. Another restaurant you might want to try is Il Piccolo Fontana in the El San Juan . Excellent food and exquisite old world service. If you stay at the Holiday Inn, go to the beach during the day and just hit theESJ each night, your vacation will likely be the best of your adult life Of course, you might discover something new on your own.

Agree with both of the previous; The Sheraton is more family oriented catering to people who have just arrived via cruise ship..so they're lots of kids around.

Another thing, Isla Verde is perfectly geared for a long weekend from the East Coast. It's literally right next to the airport, so upon landing, you are only a few minutes away from starting the long weekend.

Ohhhh... but Old San Juan is just GORGEOUS still right after x-mas, just passed the 3 Kings Day (Jan 6th) and just before the San Sebastian carnival! The time period is called the OCTAVITAS, and the x-mas and celebration atmosphere prevails. Weekends during those dates are buzzing with activities in OSJ, the night air is breezy and cool and the old city has a charm you will find nowhere else in Puerto Rico or any nearby island. Yes, the Holiday Inn beachfront location is nice, but you can get a similar place just about everywhere in these parts. The beach is not that warm on those dates and not that inviting. The nightlife in Isla Verde is very touristy. The Waterclub is not only expensive, but frequented by much younger crowds and the casinos are filled with high rollers or older folks, which is fine, but not to spend huge ammounts of time there. OSJ is 100% more romantic, day & night, even at the Sheraton. Don't take buses, for Christ's sake! ... not very romantic, safe or convenient!

Hi 2girlsdad,

There are pros and cons for either choice.

I recommend the Holiday Inn because it is a short walk to Isla Verde Beach, the best beach in the San Juan area. You'd be close to several luxurious hotels such as the El San Juan and Casino and the Ritz Carlton among others. Its conveniently located near stores, retaurants, and the airport.

Remember, its a Holiday Day Inn and not luxurious in any way. I stayed there last May and it was OK for a long weekend. My room was clean and the service was satisfactory but again, it is not luxurious. The Sheraton is probably a little more luxurious but its in OLD SAN JUAN, as you already know, and there's no beach there.

Also, the Holiday Inn is a short cab ride to Condado and Old San Juan. Taxis are a little expensive in PR. Be ready for that. I wouldn't take the bus because there are too many stops and it gets too crowded, unless you want to get the real feel for the local scene.

No matter what you choose, it will be nice at either locations.

Good Luck!
