Beach,Ocean and Pool at InterCont/El San Juan vs. La Concha?

Our family (kids 10 and 11) will be retruning to San Juan for 2 nights in early January.

On our previous trip we visited the Intercontintental and El San Juan for lunch, and recall the pool areas and beach area, including the ocean itself, looking good for kids.

We are considering staying at La Concha as well this trip as many good TA reviews however some reviews mention the ocean in front often being very rough and not kid-friendly.

Am I correct in assuming that although ocean conditions can vary from day to day that in general the ocean in front of La Concha is often "rougher" than in front of the Inter-Continental and El San Juan?

A few of the La Concha reviews also mention the swimming pools being a bit on the small side and also may not be as good for kids compared to the pools at the Inter Cont and El San Juan?

Any feedback would be much appreciated!

You are correct, the beach at La Concha is always rougher than that of Isla Verde hotels. In Condado, the tiny beach right at the Conrad is the safest for kids. Correct too about the pools.

No argument here. You might also want to look at the Courtyard in Isla Verde. It's just a bit further down from the Intercontinental & El San Juan and is a very family friendly hotel. it has a nice pool and the beach is one of the best in San Juan. I believe it's a blue flag beach. Also, I'm not sure but I think you can probably get it for less $ than the other two.

Hi Treepalm, I think that you will enjoy the Intercontinental. Not only is the pool and beach great, there are water sports on the beach and plenty of food options which appeal to kids.

Beach is definately better on Isle Verde v. Condado. Condado has a greater walkability and restaurant choices. However if you do chose Condado I would choose the Marriott Stelleras as the pools and hotel are a lot more kid friendly than La Concha a short 2 blocks away. I disagree with the comments about the Conrad as the beach is a public park on a lagoon to the side. Ideak for toddlers, but children 10 and 11 would probably want something more. The beach at the Marriott is ok on a calm day, but anything more the red flags are set out.

I am also tossing between El San Juan and LaConcha. I realize the beach is somewhat nicer at El San Juan but I also thought the location was better ?? Reading the above comments that might not be so???

Does Condado in fact have more to walk to than Isle Verde? We will rent a car for day trips, mostly to get to beaches because I'm not crazy about either Isle Verde or Condado for their beaches, but at night I'd rather be able to walk to restaurants/bars/casino's. Thanks!

If you remove the beach element from the comparison then I think there is really no contest. Condado wins by a mile. (Sorry to any Isla Verde fans)

Oh sbenus, Those are fighting words ( only kidding). I will agree that the Condado has a big edge if you live there or are there long term. But for most of us visitors the beach is a big factor and the bars and restaurants both local and in hotels in Isla Verde are sufficient for the few days we get to be in San Juan. The El San Juan provides a great entertainment resource. True, Isla Verde Avenue is a little gritty but there are areas like Biascoechea that are available for a walk or run. Also, San Juan is compact so its no big deal to go from IV to the Condado or to Old San Juan. In reality its all pretty great to me.

the beach in front of La Concha is sometimes rough and has currents, not nice for children or elderly or disabled people. if you walk from La Concha to the area where there are guesthouses (Ocean Park) the beach is similar to Isla Verde, it is a 15 minute walk. You will see a small park Parque del Indio and you can walk across the park towards the beach and walk east

@prvisitor

Not looking for a fight hehehe just stating my preference. At least for me, if you remove the beach comparison between them, I much prefer the Condado area. That's not to say anything bad about IV. I know it's got fans ;-)
