family trip

I am planning a trip to Puerto Rico, for November. I have never stayed in San juan before, but we will be this trip for a few days. What is the best area to stay in, if we are not planning on renting a car right away. This is a family trip, and we will be traveling with a 5 and 7 year old. Thank you for any tips.

Isla Verde or Condado is a good base without a car.

Either Old San Juan, Isla Verde or Condado will do. Choose OSJ if you want to be in the historic part and don't need a hotel with a beachfront. In Isla Verde is do want a nice swimmable beach within walking distance to your hotel, or right in front of it. And in Condado if you prefer a beachfront hotel with more restaurants and shops within walking distance.

If your kids enjoy the beach, I would strongly recommend staying in Isla Verde because the beach is nicer and much calmer than Condado's. Except for Caribe Hilton and Conrad (both in Condado), which have man made lagoon "beaches" that are safer for small children.

Isla Verde too has restaurants and shops within walking distance.

You will only need a car when venturing outside the San Juan area.

Hello! We went last summer with our 2 boys and stayed in OSJ at Caleta 64. No pool, but walking in OSJ was wonderful and the boys are still talking about it. The fort, ice cream vendors, excellent food all in a 500 year old UNESCO World Heritage Site that is a living place!

We went during march break and had a great time at hilton caribe. My children (2 and 5) appreciated the man made lagoon and the playground. My kids get up really early and we found the pool far too cold at that time. We started our day with a coffee from the lobby (Starbucks) while the kids played on the playground then ventured into old San juan for breakfast and sight seeing. Taxi only cost 12 dollars from Hilton and they wait outside the lobby. After sightseeing we would have lunch and then head back to hotel for pool and beach fun. For dinner you can eat at one of the many restaurants in the hotel or cab it to condado. We found it a nice walk from condado back to hotel after dinner. There is also a free trolley that will take you around old San juan between sights.

Definitely not a stay on beach all day type of hotel. The drinks from the pool bar are very expensive as well as food. The lobby bar/restaurant had a happy hour with cheaper drinks and food. More authentic food is found off site.
