What area should we rent in

Hi, we are planning our honeymoon to Puerto Rico and we are wanting to do a vacation rental (though we aren't sold on the idea), but the problem is we have no idea what area we should look in. We know that we want to do the national forest, to see San Juan and El Morro, and to have a very nice beach. What areas would put us in a pretty central location for these things? ? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You may want to look in the Condado and Isla Verde areas. Both are w/in a cab or bus ride from Old San Juan. El Yunque is about 45 minutes east of San Juan. You can rent a car to spend the day there for flexibility. The ride is very easy, mostly highway. If you choose not to rent a car, there are tour companies that will take you.

Renting is a great option when it comes to saving money in food and parking.

If you want a nice beach but still be close to most attractions, you should definetely look into renting in Isla Verde. ESJ Towers and Marbella are right on the nicest beach in San Juan, and have private pool and parking. Both condominium buildings get great reviews here on TA, are only 15 minutes from Old San Juan, and 5 minutes from both the airport and Condado, and 45 minutes from the rainforest.

Check vrbo.com for more information.

Honeymoon, do you want privacy and alone time? Metro San Juan is over a million people if not 2 million. Head up into the rain forest for quiet and privacy. Secluded beaches would be over on Culebra or Vieques. Just thoughts. There are some rental properties up around El Yunque (El Verde area) on large properties. 5 acres. Private home, private patio, private space.

We just booked a vacation rental up around El Yunque. I emailed several different hosts, and they were all very kind and helpful. One place is Hamilton Cabin, El Yunque. It looks real nice and cozy. They were booked at the time we needed and found another nice home in the forest. Check out vacation rental sites for P. R. and you will have reviews to read on the properties as well. It's a great way to go. You get so much more than just a hotel room. You can head for civilization for the day and come back to your own private home at night! Good luck!

Puerto Rico is a large very diverse island. Where you go depends on the style of vacation you prefer.

In general, most visitors to the island gravitate to one of several areas: (1) San Juan (Condado / Isle Verde) which have Miami like urban beach front resorts. Lots of night life, restaurants, activity. (2) Old San Juan - great historic district, best restaurants, museums, shops - no beach (3) El Yunque Rain Forest region - Island atmosphere, several major beach resorts, island type activities - remote beaches, bio bay, rain forest, horseback, zip lines etc. (4) Rincon on the West Coast - Surfer world, laid back, chill. (5) Vieques and Culebra: Beautiful and isolated tropical islands for those who want to avoid civilization, bit of a hassle to get to.

By "Vacation Rental" I assume you mean villas/condos rather than a hotel. These are more plentiful outside of San Juan, though there are some in town as well. There are numerous villas / condos available on Home Away, VRBO and of course TA. Getting around is easy and unless your style is Miami Beach, no reason to limit your first trip to San Juan. A car is almost essential if you are not staying right in San Juan and renting one will be your most cost effective mode of transport.
